General Cycling Discussion - Cycling Videos...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Alright, from the road cycling forums I have put out a couple of videos on criteriums in the last month. They were well recieved (i.e. 800+ downloads each). I also do not want to say how much I got hit on bandwith... lets just say more than some high end MTB carbon handlebars  for sharing them via my hosting.
I am in the process of trying to get a dedicated server but I need to find some way to distribute content without using 38 GB of bandwith from the server. I am thinking of using some P2P system like bit torrent.
Any ideas on the best way to share 30 MB files around the net?
Thanks as always...
Some webhosts offer large bandwidth with minimal fee. midPhase (http://midphase.com/) allows 60GB for $7.95/month. Or I can host your file... I've only used 300MB so far :D

Bit hard to believe they hit you for outgoing data. In fact, I can't believe that little membership blurb that says the hosting of this website costs as much as it does. I host over 20 domains on a dedicated server, including some biggies and never get charged for outgoing data. My cost is around Aus$165 PM that's around US$140. I'd do some serious looking around. If I was paying some US$380 for hosting and not getting it back in paid advertising I'd be giving it the flick as a bad joke.
The problem is that I used 38 GBs in 2 days, that is right two days...
I almost have to go dedicated to serve that much but I would rather not pay 100 per month + to share a few videos...
Bit-torrent seems like a good option because for videos I can let 10 people download it then those 10 can share with 100 and on and on... no charge to me

That's some serious data there old bean. You should be able to get hosting with little or no data charged for data leaving your site. Porn sites wouldn't be able to exist if the service wasn't available. Some of those sites do that much in a few hours.
Check and see if your ISP offers reverse caching or will host your files (for a fee I am sure). Sorry not much is really free.

I would love to know what hosting provider you are using that has no outgoing bandwidth limit.
Virtually all hosting plans specify a maximum monthly data throughput. See http://dreamhost.net/shared/comparison.html for an example. If a host claims to offer free unlimited bandwidth with their hosting plans, there is still a limit, they just aren't telling you what it is. The fact is, bandwidth costs money, which is not to say the original poster can't get a better deal. In fact, you can start by looking at the linked page. I use http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/web-hosting-plans.html
As for porn sites, they charge membership fees. That covers their costs. And then some.

You might want to look into compressing your files, and, yes, Bittorrent is definitely a smart way to go.

I agree with what you say Recursive.
However, a better deal must be able to be brokered. As mentioned, I pay around US$145.00 for my own dedicated server, that's my own server plugged into their system. No excess data charges whatsoever. Won't do my58vw any good though. Also, you need to have a good understanding about web servers etc. Because my hosting company won't even reboot.
Concering porn sites yes they do charge membership but not all of them do. I could give examples but that might be going beyond the scope of the thread. Paid advertsing props them up well.
I find with forums that you get the same people comeing through all the time and therefore you need a huge membership to make it pay. It makes it harder too when members are allowed to advertise.

Bit Torrent them...
What would be cool, is if someone had a Cycling only Bittorrent site... people could seed race videos, or whatever...

I'm thinking it'd be quite hard to keep them seeded...

I thnk a lot depends on the popularity... what could happen is an announcement could be made here, and at other cycling related sites about a new race availalbe, and then let the seeding and torrenting take over...

No worries. Rename them to "BRTTNY_SPRS_NKD_CRIT0308.MPG" and post them to your favorite torrent site.

Lol ;)
Well a torrent site could be nice to have.. BUT that would require cappers that does the movies. Could prob host something like that on my server. BUT already got way to slow cpu to serve more stuff on it :(
