Would a custom touring bike with a softride beam make sense? My theory is that the ride would be smooth, but would the rider's upper body have to work harder to balance the load since the rider's body mass isn't firmly attached to the frame? (assuming beam durability not a factor)
Anyone try this setup or have a counter theory? Thanks in advance.

Beam bikes add too much weight. If they didn't more folks would ride one. Comfy? About the same as a good suspension seatpost which is a lot cheaper. I had one. It takes getting used to. It definitely improves your spin. You cannot mash on a beam bike. Not worth the weight gain imho. Plus it looks like a giant phallus sticking out from well..... you get the idea. I don't think the women are impressed. But maybe subliminally.... I don't know. So if you're desperate for some action it's worth a try.

Oh sorry...didn't notice you're from SFO. Just to be balanced, maybe guys are impressed too. I don't know.

<chuckle> Actually, i'm down near Santa Cruz :)
we'll i'm not too concerned if it looks goofy, or a bit of extra weight, but i'd sure like to know if 40 lbs of gear feels (squirreley/noodley - i can't find the right word) on a beam bike. I had minor back surgery so comfy would definitely be nice.
