Hi all, my wife and I are thinking of getting a few bikes, and would like to know what to do with the kids.

Our childrens ages are 2yrs 6 mos, and our youngest is 8 mos.

We are assuming that a rear seat would be fine for the toddler, but are curious of what would be best for our youngest. We were thinking of a harness that the little could ride on one of our backs but are really unsure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you have a particular brand preference please state which and why.

Thanks again, Brymac

Brymac, welcome to the forums.

I have a 4 year old and a 4 month old. The oldest has just got a trailer bike which he's very excited about. The youngest still isn't quite ready for the seat yet, so he goes in a car capsule bungied into a trailer. I reckon he'll be ready to go into the bike seat in a couple of months, so I suspect your 8 month old would be ok in one. If they can hold their head up and reasonably steady whilst wearing a helmet, they should be fine in the rack seat. The age this happens will vary from child to child.

The bike seat we have can be adjusted to lay back slightly which helps if they fall asleep in the seat, and there's nothing like a bike ride to put a baby to sleep. Another feature of it is that it has a quick release mounting to a 'normal' rear rack. Actually it's a proprietary rack that comes with the seat - it's slightly narrower than a Blackburn rack so the seat will only fit on their own rack. My wife and I have a rack on each of our bikes so either of us can take the seat, and it accepts panniers for my commuting during the week. I've been really happy with our seat. The brand is Bito, if I recall correctly.

[edit - Make that Beto. See it here (http://www2.clicshop.com/stores/triketrails/c44722p9607253.2.html). You might also find this article (http://www.cyclists.org.uk/articles.php?article=12) useful.]

We're also thinking of getting a Bobike Mini (http://www.middleman.com.au/mini.html) for the baby until he's big enough for the rear seat.
