Bicycle Mechanics - How can I find the size of my Bottom Bracket?

Hello all,

I have an old (10 year old) cannondale Delta V 1000. I will be wanting to find the replacement bottom bracket. How do I find the size, short of stripping the bike?

BB shell width on the frame and pull the crank and measure the spindle length. Quicker and more certain than trying to sort all the guesses and wheat from chaff.

Sheldon Brown to the rescue as usual... you can measure all the relevant parts of the spindle correctly using a handy diagram:

As sydney pointed out, you can measure (B) from the frame. You should take the cranks off so that you can measure the overall length and the widths of the two sides carefully.

The drive-side width (C) is pretty important because it affects how the chainrings line up with the front derailer and with the rear cogs.

10 years old? I'd say iffy...

10 years old? I'd say iffy... I wouldn't.That only makes it 1995. I've seen lots older stuff with cartridges in common usage.

It will be a normal English/ISO 68 mm bottom bracket, but the spindle length will depend on what kind of crankset you've got.

If the chart shows a choice, go for the longer option, Cannondales generally have plump seat tubes.
