Commuting - 1st commute...a success!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was a bit iffy about making the ride in today for the first time, since I got up and it was 7.1C, however by the time I finished my breakfast it was 8.2 so I decided to go for it.
30km later I arrive at work, feeling better than ever! :D
The best thing is, that I left exactly with the train that I would usually take. It takes about an hour by train and the bike took 1h15 and I'm sure that that will improve.
Added bonus : my work has a shower!
This looks like it could be a regular thing!

Spire,
EXCELLENT!! Welcome to the club. Just be aware that the Surgeon General has determined that bicycle commuting has been determined to be addictive and euphoria-inducing!
30 km! That's a pretty serious commute. My AM commute is only about 13 km while going home is anywhere from 19 to 40+. Like you I find that commuting doesn't take much longer than driving and is actually faster than riding the bus since I never have to wait or change buses. Actually, I think commuting saves time. Assuming one would, as one should, do some exercise each day, bicycle commuting accomplishes both the commute and the exercise in about the same time. It's like free exercise!

Hi Ya Spike!
Congrats on your commute! I have been commuting for just over a year now, and I love it! It is so nice to arrive at work high on your ride, and ready for anything! So far, I have only found one bad thing about commuting. I park ol' Blue, my trusty Paramount, here in the office with me. And, typically, about 6 hours into the work day, I hear this faint female voice whispering "Pssst, let' go!" or "We can make it home faster than we make it to work" or "There are adventures out there..." and it can be a little distracting! Other than that, it is wonderful!!
Good deal on the shower! I have to rinse off as best I can at a sink, but so far, no one has hung an air freshener around my neck, so it must be working!
Keep up your commuting, be careful, and have a blast, better things are yet to come!!

Welcome to the club :D
Just try not to look too smug when you get in feeling great - no go on show them what they're missing ;)

WTG, Spire! That's not a bad time for that quite ambitious commute, either. You have plenty of reasons to feel good.
Pretty soon the difference between a good day and the other ones will be whether you rode to work or not. Bike commuting is the world's best physical and mental fitness program.
Keep it up!

i, like you, just recently started my commuting via bike to work. however it's probably about 2km and IN to work is mostly downhill. heh heh, there's a wry pun in there somewhere.
i have already gotten hooked on the excitement of spinning through intersections and dodging the stalled morning delivery trucks, motorists bleary-eyed and cranky before their 2nd cup of coffee, and taxi drivers speeding to/from their next dollar fare. i arrive to work breathless, slightly sweaty and walking funny because my legs are not quite used to cranking vigorously in such a manner.
the nice thing is going home is mostly uphill and i get to pound out all my frustrations, get my heart beating again after a days worth of sitting at my computer and feel a bit healthier.
enjoy!
