i'm finally fed up enough with balancing my bikes on strange objects to invest in a workstand. care to recommend your favorite for home use? it's gonna live in an apartment, so space is a consideration, but i'm wondering if i should be wary of the cheapies...

also picking up a set of metric calipers. vernier? just something for general bike usage.

lay your wisdom on me...

[edit] disregard; just saw the other repair stand thread. but calipers?

There's actually an active post, started by me, on just this subject, entitled 'Repair stands for $cheap$. You and I are suffering the exact same problems. And I had a little caliper thread going about 6 days ago. Try a search under my name. I'd even like to bring that one back--too many to choose from IMO.
