Picked up a Huffy Sportster 3 speed in good shape. It appears to be one of the old rebadged Raleighs from the 50's/60's

Other than the obivious google finds, can someone direct me to a site that may shead some light on this?

Orange or blue? I picked up a matching pair his/hers a few years ago, his orange and hers blue. The Sturmey hub date on these is '64. They're pretty cool for Huffys.

I haven't seen anything good bikewise for about a year at our local Goodwill. Had occaision to talk with someone in their HQ on the job (I do collections for the State) & mentioned the lack of decent bikes lately. Was told they now put the good stuff on eBay. Looks like I will have to do some thrift shopping on my next out of State trip.

Black, oddly enough. At least I think its black under all of the grime. I'll wipe it down tonight and see if I can glean some numbers for you.

Thanks, I thought so. Even if it was crap, you just cant go wrong on $1 bike day. I picked up a cool old coaster brake single too, but I mostly grabbed it for the parts. Best $2.12 I've spent all week ;)

Me, too. I've shopped a bazillion Goodwills and other thrift shops, and the personnel wouldn't know "the good stuff" if it showed up labeled in three different languages.

Besides, unless a bike is worth in excess of at least a couple of hundred bucks, it isn't worth the time or the effort to list it on eBay and ship it to the winner. Hell, I've seen fleets of nice mid and higher level Miyata's that don't make reserve, and don't go past $70-80 on eBay.

There is a local thrift shop in town that tried to squeeze more money out of their bike pile once. They used to price all the bikes the same ($20 or $25, I don't recall). Then they got the bright idea that they could price them individually and make more money. The problem was that they didn't know squat about bikes, and so priced them according to how shiny or new looking they were. They had newish looking Huffy's priced at $60-$70 as well as other blunders, and people stopped buying bikes altogether - the prices didn't make sense and the bikes piled up in the yard for a couple of months. Finally, they came to their senses and priced all the bikes at $5.00 just to get rid of some and clear the yard out.

And then we have the other side of that coin; when they think so-so stuff is really valuable. The crew at Thrift Town is up to their old tricks again this week; they got in an old, all steel, low-end Peugeot that might've been a good donor bike for $10 or $15. Apparently somebody there has heard the name 'Peugeot' before and therefore believes any example is a rare find. Any time any example turns up there it automatically gets priced at $49.95 (I guess an even $50 would be over the top), and sits and sits until it disappears to wherever what they can't sell goes. Sort of a waste; this one had Mafac centerpulls, a Nervex crank, and a leather saddle I could've used...

If I had a dollar for every thrift shop Huffy/Magna I've seen priced at $60.00 or better, I'd be rich.

It's not really e-bay, she referred to it as their "e-bay store". Go to www.shopgoodwill.com & check it out. I just did a quick look & didn't see any bikes but they list stuff from Goodwill stores all over the country. Don

although they soetimes make mistakes and miss things. my wife got a 25or 30 $ ladies wallet new with tag for .49 cent.normally that brand ends up on the auction site.I found a couple nice 100% wool sweaters.got em both for $1.60. I just love our goodwill store!
