Someone once told me that Shimano cranks shift better because the chainrings are ramped and pinned. I noticed that many of the other cranks are now pinned and ramped too. So, do the other cranks with the ramped and pinned chainrings shift as well as Shimano's cranks?

I can't tell any difference. By far the biggest difference in front shifting quality comes from careful adjustment of the front derailleur.

My first reaction was, "cranks don't shift." :)

My second reaction was, "Shimano doesn't do anything better." :)

If you shift properly, i.e., while turning the cranks gently, you "don't need no stinkin' pins and ramps." (None of my bikes have pins or ramps, and I really don't miss them at all.)
