General Cycling Discussion - NYC Cyclists: where can a girl earn herself a road bike around these parts?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i sold all of mine off before i moved back to the city, even the collapsible one, because i just couldnt fit it with all my stuff.
where can a girl put in some work hours, unsticking seatposts, truing wheels, fixing flats, etc. to earn herself a small roadbike?
whats the NYC version of Pittsburgh's Free Ride?

I've never in my life heard of a program where you can do some odd jobs on bicycles to "earn" a bicycle. Your best bet might be to get a job in a bicycle shop - you'd earn some money and might get a discount on the bicycles.

Yes they have those, they're like bike repair co-op things. Fix so many bikes or so and earn your bike.

Cool! Sounds like a good program - you'd get to know how to take care of your bicycle too.

Not in NYC though...I'd check with the Times Up folks in NYC.

Yeah, Times Up might be able to help - they're the best bet I can think of, anyway. I know they ran a program like that before the RNC... but it didn't really work out all that well for organizational reasons, so I don't think they're still doing it :(
Someone on .Craigslist (http://newyork.craigslist.org/bik/) had a work-for-bike offer not too long ago. There are usually plenty of bikes in the $100 range and occasionally for free. Posting there certainly can't hurt.

I have a free bike I"m willing to give in exchange for certain personal favors...
EDIT: ...like giving people a sense of humor! There I said it! *Puts on asbestos suit*

Recycle a bike will probably be safer than anything slvoid is talking about. :) They may even make such a deal with you. Also, check out bicycle habitat on Lafayette, there are mostly women working the floor and they all ride. One of them may have a solution to your dilemma. Good luck.

That is just plain out of line.

Too bad it's intelligence.

I'm surprised no one tried playing that card when people were going around trying to convince people helmets were dangerous. At least in that instance, I can see where bad advance can actually get someone injured or killed. So much for the intelligence of that one.
Anyway, if you'd read the other post, try recycle-a-bike near main street at DUMBO. They have a program to that teaches kids how to fix and repair bikes and they'll let you choose a bike, repair it, and keep it.

:roflmao: you're right.
But really, the post that started this belongs in the Boys Under 12 Forum. Grow up already.

I see nothing wrong with slvoid's post pre-edit. He never said what, exactly, the personal favors were. It's up to the reader to interpret it, or to contact him and ask what they are, specifically. Your own dirty thoughts are what made his post offensive.

Yeah, i agree. You people are too touchie.
The message is loud and clear. Over-and-out.

Ok, so from now on, whenever anyone even remotely presumes that anything made in china is even remotely inferior I will get offended. Also, the moment anyone gets injuried over advice given on bike mechanics, they will leverage a full on lawsuit. Also, unless a message is explicit in its intention, no more assuming and guessing what someone is actually trying to say, it has to be "loud and clear" ok.
Now let's all be good and be completely political correct (which means the next time someone mentions "made in china" with any perceived negative subject, I will be very very offended). In fact, let's stop talking about this all together and get back to the rest of us who are actually providing advice on helping this girl get a bike.
he wanted someone to help him move his many bikes around his very cluttered apartment!

Exactly.. :) I actually cleaned the place up though and found out that if you put the bikes head-tail (instead of facing the same direction) against each other, you can shave like 6 inches off the space they take up.
Now that you mention it, I had a friend in college who has like 5 bikes in his house and he only uses 2 of them.
The poster would probably never want to talk to me now that I made that creepy comment but I think my friend doesn't even want 3 of those bikes, they're just lying around for spares and backup. God.. now instead of seat sniffer, I've been downgraded even further than I thought possible to "pervert". And I didn't even mean it. :(

From what I hear, slvoid is not only offensive, but quite possibly made in China. Plus, by his own admission, he sniffs seats. Clearly, something must be done. ;)

Your honor, as Slvoid is speechless I petition the court to show leniency. While he may be guilty of having a low brow sense of humor I submit to you that the title of the thread was leading (and misleading). I know I looked at it purely to see the wise cracks (please no comments about cracks here or I'll be offended ;) ) about "earning" a bike (and "quote unquote" is a pretty gender neutral user name so in my particular case it wasn't like I was viewing the thread just to see a woman get harassed). If it pleases the court I ask that Slvoid get a suspended sentence and this thread be dismissed?
I'd also like to remind the jury that I was temporarily insane after having found out that the shiny left ultegra shifter caps had fallen off BOTH my bikes.
Good morning, Worm your honor
The crown will plainly show the prisoner
Who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings
Showing feelings of an almost human nature;
This will not do.
