Touring - dry clean

are there any ways that you can clean yourself, getting the grease, dirt and whatever off without water?

Really! They're great!! I bring them with me on just about all my rides.

Most auto parts stores carry a waterless hand cleaner. All you need is a rag to wipe off your hands. It works quite well and lasts forever. A buddy of mine just found a can of 20 year old stuff in his garage, it still works.

Machka, I've tried these for cleaning up after commuting to work. For some reason I can't stand smelling like a baby wipe. Is there something you know of that has a neutral smell--or at least doesn't have that 'baby powder" smell or whatever it is? Thanks.

They make wipes in a multitude of flavors now, the ones I am using have a lemon scent to them, so I guess if you don't mind smelling citrusey.... :p

The baby wipes are quite versatile too ... not only are they good for cleaning grease and dirt off your hands after doing some mechanical work, but they are also great if you've suddenly got to make a 'stop' in the bushes when there are no facilities around (the purpose for which they were originally intended). They can help you smell fresh and clean if you've been without showers for a while - I found it refreshing to 'wash' my face with one when I was riding through hotter temps because it got rid of some of the sweat and grime. And if some happen to dry out, they make good kleenexes/tissues/handkerchiefs because they're strong - they won't disintegrate on you. A dry one would probably also work in place of gauze if you've got to cover some road rash. Quite a multipurpose little tool! :)

There are wipes available in the same section of stores as paper towels that do not smell like baby wipes, and in the cosmetics sections there are wipes intended for removing makeup that work well on my greasy face; far better than standard towelettes. There are also larger wipes available at pet stores intended for wiping down dogs, which I used to keep handy in my Jeep, and used them to clean myself a time or two. Places that sell hunting supplies might carry a large towelette I have seen advertised for hunters to use to clean themselves.

Baby wipes and, believe it or not, spf 30-40. I have found that the sun-block cuts chain grease surprisingly well. I used to cary a little tin of mechanics waterless hand cleaner but it became redundant.

They have wet wipes that have a lemon smell to it, and Gillette (spelling?) makes wet wipes that smell like aftershave.
