Yesterday I was replacing a broken drive side spoke on my rear wheel. When I pulled the cassette off to get access I noticed that several spokes were obviously scraped and some had large slivers of metal peeled back as if by a potato peeler. On a couple I had to squeeze the "shavings" down to get the spoke out, and even then it was difficult. I wound up replacing seven spokes because I was very concerned about their integrity after such abuse. The only thing I can figure is that at some point I must have dropped the chain on the inside and the force of the rotating wheel and the pressure of the chain being squeezed against the spokes by the cassette must have been powerful enough to do such damage. Replacing all those spokes was a pain, but on the positive side that wheel is now beautifully true.

So the moral is, if you have ever lost the chain on the inside like that you might want to pull your cassette/freewheel and check those spokes! They could be ugly.
FWIW,
