General Cycling Discussion - Safety hats

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

There seems to be quite a vast range as far as pricing goes. I already don the purple bone dome when I go out but couldn't help but notice a trendier flame patter cut on a hat the other day. Picked it up and looked at the price Aus$265.00. Then picked up the less trendy hat next to it and it was Aus$35.00. I assume the $265.00 hat was brand name, prolly what old mate Armstrong wears in the TDF. I did observe that not one shark fin hat was kept in stock.... prolly due to wake turbulence issues.
So how much have you spent on your lid? and do you believe there's anything more than cosmetic difference. A cursory glance seems to indicate a foam core covered by a shiney plastic exterior.

Well, HD, according to the folks who test these things, they're all supposed to meet minimum safety specs. So, I'd say get one that fits, that you can afford and that you like enough to wear--but not in the shower when you're shaving your legs.

I do believe you're stalking me BB. It's just as well that I don't mind or this could lead to serious consequences. :D

I spent $60. I like the helmets with better ventilation(i.e. more holes) so I spent a little extra to get more venting.

Generally speaking the more expensive helmets have more holes in them, or bigger holes. The helmet is lighter and cooler in the heat. Some of them will have different methods to adjust the fit. That is something you need to try, to see if you like it.
Like many bicycle things, you spend more to get less! The more you spend the smaller the difference is too!
My grandpa told me what brand of brain bucket to get, so i got it :) I like it :) I think it was $45

Being used sits okay with me.
What's the exchange rate? $260 australian still sounds like a LOT of money.
I saw one in the clearance section of the LBS. Asked what the price was. $110 for a 2 year old helmet! I got the low end (but not the lowest) model clearanced for $25 (Bell Ukon). Works fine. Gets a little hot, but all helmets do and is has a lot of vents for the price (not THAT much diff. from the $110 one!).

Today that would be about US$205.00 I'm sure it would have to be a big name brand for someone to ask that sort of money for it. Had to admit, it was prolly the nicest hat in the place. Guess I'll stick with the purple dome of silence.

Carve one out of a coconut shell. :)

I don't even think they sell one that expensive around here. Most expensive one I've seen is the giro atmos that lance wears and that's only $189.

I have a $20 Bell Helmet. It seems to work? No test results yet. . .

hopefully you won't have to test it...
I think the Ukon is normally $35 or so, but it works fine for me :). I might have to get the cool cap out for summer riding though.

The more I look at it the more I believe the lid I was looking at the other day was a Giro. Those coconut hats look cool - prolly quite effective too since I've never seen a buggered coconut.. 'cept until I've had a chop at it.

- - Fifty bucks for my Giro Semi MX. Meets all the official safety specs.
Why pay more? Don't know.
The carved coconut and mahogany helmets are impressive.

Yeah but what if your head was inside the coconut? I don't see any padding there.

Uh yeah, just cause the helmet doesn't break doesn't mean you won't :P

Be careful, ruchai, I don't think that helmet's Shell approved!

I think those coconut helmets were designed by the Professor and tested out by Gilligan and the Skipper. Mr. Howell probably financed the whole operation.

You may be right. I would have left the meat in for padding....

$35.00 no more. Bell w/visor: The vents are very effective. However, in the winter I use a head liner to keep the brains and ears just right and for the hot rides I use a head band and never had a problem. The helmet is at the right price for me and thank god I have yet to need it’s services. The funny thing is that I purchase a new helmet about every 5 to 8 years and I really do not have any real reason other than strap wear or something. My most resent was that I like the idea of the removable visor for my commute. I would like to say this that vents are very important to the long distance riders I know of. I know of one guy that just got one. Our group talked about the price for 43 miles. His wife just did not quit understand his needs at the time.

i got one of them protec safety hats.
do you really say safety hat down there? it just sounds so dorky.

I don't know. I'm the only cyclist I know apart from some bike salesmen with shaved legs. I just assumed "safety hat" would be acceptable by the general consumer here :D

I really don't understand why you would need a safety hat/helmet down there.
Since you are riding upside down, if you fall off your bike, won't you just go up into the sky??
Doesn't that make a race down a mineshaft a hill climb? :D

There's a "men without hats"/"safety dance" joke in here somewhere. I'll leave it to the professionals to find.

I hear what you're saying mate. I never have been able to figure that one out myself. I always thought we'd fall up too, but there must be a point where you'd start falling back down, I really don't get it.

sorry....you saw that coming, right?
He's younger than me, and he knows it :). I still talk to him anyway since he wants to be a mechanical engineer (with a little prodding from me).

Oh now that's just sad. Have you no compassion, no soul? Mechanical engineer. Why not carve out his soul with a Dremel tool while you're at it?

/Ontopic: $40 dorky Bell helmet. The helmet is dorky but the red ponytail sticking out the back MAKES it cool.
