I've a wheel set with standard 700c mavic rims and 28-spoke hubs. IF (and I realize this is a BIG "if,") I put 28mm tires on these wheels and treat them gently, will they be sufficiently robust to handle my 250# body and the 23#(?) bike above them?

I'm thinking that the tires would absorb much of the road stress that the rims would normally have to cope with. The topmost spokes would still need to "hang" all the weight of the bike & rider, though, and rotational stresses would be severe on the cog side of the rear wheel.

Would it help enough if I tied the spokes at the outmost cross?

I realize that deep-v rims with more spokes would make a stronger wheel, but I'm trying to cheap out here until I dump some more fat.

Another immediately viable alternative is to shop yard sales for older bikes with more spokes & just swap out.

Thoughts? Thanks!

well, i dont know 28h is a stretch. What rims are these? And do you know what the guage of your spokes are?
You can solder the spokes at the cross, some say it makes a difference and some not. Deep V rims even with 28 spokes would be strong, or at least velocity areoheads. Both are strong as hell and not too expensive

If I'm going to go to the expense of rims, I'll surely go with 36 spokes. I'm just trying to get by cheaply for now..

well with Deep V's the structure is just so strong you dont need it. It would not hurt to have it though, stick some butted spokes on that thing and its one of the strongest wheels you can get

I weigh 26o lbs and the wheels that came on my Fuji lasted me 240 miles before I broke a spoke. My back wheel started going out at around 100 miles. They were 700x25c tires and the wheels were 32 spoke. My bike mechanic built me a 36 spoke wheel on a Mavic MA-40 Rim. This sure seems like a very sturdy rim. He built it on a Shimano Deore LX hub.

Shimano hubs are strong. I know the XT's i ran for a while felt bomb proof, also over 1lb but still very strong. But i think Jujus are better
