Good reason to carry two bidons with you, one with half-strength mix your own sports drink, the other with plain water. Rinse with water after every swig of sports drink.
I started doing that last summer.
One full strength sweet thick energy drink, the other plain water.
The condition is similar to how I used to etch metal surfaces for examination.
Every metal is made of a crystalline structure. If you take a piece of metal, polish it to a mirror like surface, then etch it, you can see thes structure.
Basically etching works by having acid eat away the boundaries between crystals. For your aluminium bike frame, you use hydroflouric acid, which is some really nasty stuff. For steel, you use nitric acid + alcohol (nitol). I usually use it at 5% concentration. What happens is that as you drip nitol onto the surface of the polish, the solution at 5% settles into the crevaces between the crystals and then the alcohol evaporates, leaving behind the nitric acid and slowly the concentration starts rising and it starts eating away at the boundary layer.
Now imagine the same thing happening in your mouth with sugar, bacteria, acid, and lack of saliva to wash it away.

The article didn't define what they meant by "sports drink" nor did it specify what causes the erosion. The mention of fruit juice may imply it's the sugar. My "sports drink" (ERG) is low in sugar. It's just to replace the electrolytes. However, I do the energy bar/Gel thing, so drinking a low sugar fluid after eating is a good idea.
