I'm trying to find some decent fenders for my bike. I'm currently using Planet Bike plastic *bleh* clip-ons, which don't seem to have very much clearance. I also have a rear rack which gives me about 1 1/2" - 2" of clearance. I'd like something like freddy fenders, but I don't know if the 700 size can really fit my bike. Can anybody help?!

I would think the really slim SKS 700c fenders would fit on an older roadie, but don't quote me on that... If you get a 700c wheelset and some long reach brakes, you'll have a lot more room for your tires and fenders of choice.

Does your frame/fork have eyelets?

Most fenders I've seen for mounting on eyelets have a certain degree of adjustability and should be able to handle a 27" wheel. Take a look at some of the offerings from Zefal.

Harris Cyclery has some listed for 27":

I got some Zefal cab fenders for $15 from nashbar. They are 700C touring fenders (45 mm wide) and work fine on the 27" wheels of my fixie.

I've got a set of 45mm Zefals, too. I've had both 27" and 700C wheels on my Motobecane with these fenders and no problems. I wasn't wild about the idea of plastic fenders either -- at first. Once they arrived and I saw how much they looked like stainless steel, I quit fussing about it. For $15, you can't beat 'em with a stick.

Yeah, I like the fact that they are lighter and don't clang. However, mine do squeak a bit :P

I have the smallest width SKS 700c fenders for my 27x1-1/4 wheel bike. I also had very little clearance between the tire and the rear rack, so the next size up wouldn't have worked.

Great username, by the way!

Planet bike has 27" fenders. Go get those. Kthx.

The difference in wheel sizes from 27" to 700c is 8mm, 27" is 8mm larger than 700c. It is really only 4mm because that 8 mm difference is split by the bottom and the top of the wheel. The fenders CAN adjust this amount of difference.
It won't be a problem.

suite... thanks all. I just emailed planetbike (i kinda like the freddy fenders), and they told me it should fit on my bike. Hopefully it won't interfere with my rack!

If you really want fenders and there is very little clearance... I think the advice above is your best bet. It has worked for me.
