Hi all,
I just saw in the Nashbar catalog that they offer a moustache bar on the cheap. I was wondering then: Does anyone here use a moustache bar, how do you like it,etc? Has anyone purchased one from nashbar? I know it's pretty old school, but the bike that I'm fixing is an old japanese with spiffy lugs, so the old school look would be fine. All comments welcome, rude remarks relished.

I have moustached before. I did not like it because I couldn't get it to a comfortable position w/o resorting to a high and heavy technomic stem or the like. I did not know nashbar was selling one. I think they look great on old bikes. A cheap option that I tried with a different bike was to flip some of those old town bike bars that came on old three speeds, cut an inch or so off the ends, and bob's your uncle, moustache bars that in my case practically exactly duped the Nitto shape. Remarkably, I can't think of any rude remarks.

There is a thread in the general forum about this, check it out:

I had a Nitto and hated it...hands hurt after 20 or so miles no matter what...after I ditched them I noticed plenty of the same complaints on the Rivendell e-mail list/reader even though Riv is a huge proponent of the bars. Anyway, I didn't like but your results may be different.

not to change the subject, but how badly do i want a REAL moustache? i mean, i can grow an ok chin-beard, but the bare upper lip just doesn't cut it these days. anyone out here ride fixed with a dense, thick, hairy upper lip?

I got one for my fixie. It's ... weird. The honking position is excellent, which is *why* I got it for the fixie, but I'm not yet convinced about the cruising position(s) and I ended up with a wacky brake setup. I'll post a pic later.

hahahaha after the moustache you need to invest in some sweet binoculars and start hanging out at school yards during recess. don't forget your member's only jacket.
i have inverted cruiser bars (moustache-esque i suppose) on my single speed ross and on my peugeot fixie. i love this setup. i sit more upright, but not as much as a true flat moustache bar. i don't have a picture of my ross, but here is my peugeot. in my opinion, i think the bars really add to the "old school" look.

Those arent really moustache bars they are more like a flat bar with built in bar ends.
I have a pair of nitto moustache bars on my bike and i like using them. Nice and wide for windless days and then you can get fairly aero by gripping them close to the middle for when it's windy.
Those bars look like they might let you do the same thing so for 10 bucks i say give it a try.
I have a fairly upright riding position and a brooks saddle as well, i think the moustache bar, brooks saddle thing is for people who want a comfortable upright position over aero and weight weeny.

Hey! Thanks for the heads up on those. I am building a Kogswell fixie and am going for an old school look.

I bought a pair of nitto moustache bars out of curiosity from biowheels last summer and slapped 'em on an early 80's trek i picked up on ebay for 50 bucks. i've done a couple of long rides since and plenty of medium distance stuff, and like the setup just fine. i would like to have a technomic stem to get them a little higher though. they may be better suited for commuter and fire road/ trail riding. thinking of swapping them to an old mtn bike for a look see on the trail. if you do get them, give them some time to grow on you.

Ha! The inverted cruiser bar is what I was looking for! Thanks isotopesope.
I do have a hairy upperlip, and I don't notice much drag, although the goatee had to go, becasue it addes .002 seconds to my lap around the block.
Thanks everybody. This is a great forum.

the guy who runs the best bike shop here in town referred to inverted cruiser bars as scorcher bars. i told him to shove it. anyone who runs a local bike shop with tons of weird nos stuff, used stuff, pre-war cruisers, a 60's masi pursuit bike on display, and rides a ss don mcClung 29"er needs to check their self before they wreck their self. word. he does sometimes have a beard though, which is sort of like a big moustache in a way. real big. like all over your face. weird. beird.
