Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - bike theft

I'm working on converting and old road bike into a fixie commuter, and something has crossed my mind. Is bike theft common with fixies? I know some people will steal anything that isn't bolted down (and some things that are :mad: ), but it seems that alot of bike thieves would go to steal a fixie and realize "Hey, I can't coast on this thing. I think I'll steal something I can actually ride!" Just a thought.

I know a couple people who have had just their rear wheel stolen because it was fixed. Sucks, that's another advantage to tensioners; takes just that much longer to get the wheel off

I'd be willing to bet that fixie thefts are infinetly more common in SF, NY, boston, Chicago etc... rather than the booming metropolis of Caronport, Saskatchewan.

Are you kidding? Fixies seem to have tripled in popularity this past year alone, making them more desirable to thievery than ever before. The topic of bike theft has been covered so many goddam times... can we get it it's own forum? It's about time.

Tell me about it, stealing bikes is hard! Cuz that's exactly what I meant. Seriously, when someone gets their ride nicked, there should be a place they can post it, so the general community is made aware.

It sort of depends on why they're stealing it. A crackhead will steal anything, someone shopping for a new ride may not. Kids looking for a joy ride will certainly discover the joys of fixin' unprepared (pray you have your videocamera with you). Besides, Caronport's got, what, just over 1000 people? Not like someone's going to snag the fixie and disappear. Not in the flatlands anyway (I'm from Indian Head, myself).

it is a myth that a fixed gear is hard for theives to ride. At most the inability to coast will register as a slight annoyance until they've gone a block or two and get used to it.
remember - they just stole your bike. they're trying to get away. they're gonna keep pedaling at least until they're out of sight.
just lock it though, and put track nuts on. you'll be ok.

A thought. If the getaway vehicle is a van or a pickup, the thieves may not even realise it is a fixie until they get home.

I'm not worried about it getting stolen here in Caronport, considering I'm almost the only one in town who locks my bike period, and the fixie is a converted cheap road bike from the 80s and looks like crap compared to alot of the other bikes in town that aren't even locked up. I do, however, frequently ride into Moose Jaw, a city of around 30,000, and I have to be more carefull. But I should be fine as long as I lock it properly.

I use a new york style chain lock but I think I need to get a stronger padlock for it and maybe a mini krypto so I can lock both wheels. Locking up is such a pain...
