Greetings everyone, I've been lurking on the forums for a little while now but this is my first post. I'm also new to the fixie/track bike scene so please forgive me in advance for any ignorant/asinine newbie questions or comments. That having been said, I've got a question for all the SF/bay area members - where can I find decent track/fixie parts in SF? More specifically, I'm looking for some nitto track bars and stem, and a selle saddle. I've found some of these on American Cyclery's website, but I was wondering if you guys knew of any good alternatives as their prices seem kind of inflated and some of their employees have given me attitude in the past. Also, where can I find custom colored/striped tires for road/track? What are good tire brands for this? Thanks in advance!

you want good prices without attitude! if that's what you want just order online. finding fixed gear parts in sf is a hit or miss. I got my nitto bars from the bicycle oddessey in sausalito, but you could try dd cycles at balboa and 42nd...it's kind of out in the sticks, but it's close to the polo field and the beach. Mike has a few fixies there including his own and he will talk your ear off without any attitude.

Freewheel on hayes and clayton. Travis will hook you up. Get a membership for the coop while you are at it. They have the colorful tires too.
There is a freewheel on valencia too, good selection, but can come with an attitude so I hear. Personally I have always gotten great service there.

Ditto on DD cycles - go there and talk track with Mike. Tons of knowledge and lots of cool and funny tidbits.

Also, Golden Gate cyclery has some stuff too and no attitude.

Road Rage on Folson and I think 7th has some nice things too.

Its kind of scattered.

Road Rage has good prices on everyday stuff: chains, cogs, nitto bars, keirin grips, hubs etc. Great guys, great service. Can order most things as well. Very straight up shop.

American Cyclery has all your high end stuff and a lot of frames/bikes. Pistas, SOMA, EAI, Colanago. All kinds of goodies but they tend to be expensive.

Pedal Rev often has fancy 2nd hand stuff and the odd frame. Have seen high flange Dura Ace hubs there and other shiny things at good prices. Very hit and miss but worth checking out and talking too.

Refried Cycles in the Lower Haight has cheap fixies and a few wow track bikes. Saloon Des Bicilettes just around the corner occasionally has the odd bike (had a beautiful curly stay Hetchins for a long time) and a few bits (can pretty much order anything).

Freewheel on Valencia carries new bikes (Bianchi Concepts, Custom made frames) and plenty of bits. Can get a wee bit busy in there. A lot depends on your interaction with their staff. Some people love 'em, some hate 'em.

ditto on the 3 mentioned above...

Freewheel Hayes
DD on balboa
Road Rage

no real bargains, but all good shops with cool people and without attitude,

The red hot chili pepper salesman at freewheel valencia gives me the willies.

American cyclery has always gone out of their way to take care of and humor me. I can be a little rough. Brad also has the secret weapon working for him, Rona, she has stadium draw.

And speaking of fixies in sf, I just back from guitar wolf at bottom of the hill, I couldn't belive how many fixed gears there were locked up outside(10 or more?). It has definitely jumped the shark.

freewheel on hayes has to be my shop of choice. i'd like to second anything positive said about travis, he's just a cool dude and answers any question i have with no attitude.

valencia is a different story. can't quite put my finger on it, wouldn't say attitude, but the people working there just seem unfriendly and unapproachable. the only reason i ever go there is to drool over the gold nagasawa in the window.

haven't checked out road rage yet, but i hear nothing but good things and intend to check it out.

also (after fixedpip mentioned it) i brought my bike to refried cycles on haight/fillmore to have my bottom bracket swapped out, and the guys were cool as sh*t and quoted me the cheapest price around. on top of that, when i came up a dollar short the owner just brushed it off and let me go with my bike. (they're cash only)

ok...so i'm not the only one that has had problems trying to exchange something there..i ended up walking away from the counter leaving my receipt there...i felt that green fella inside starting to come out...add to that i had that onguard chain in my hands...that little prick of a salesmen if he was a cat, that should count as one of his 9 lives.....

but yeah....i'll never spend another dime there...

oh....american rocks, stuff priced slightly higher, but they always seem to work out some sort of deal that takes care of that in the end....great customer service,,,,,

agreed - i hate Freewheel on Valencia.

Valencia Cyclery across the street totally rocks for service and (mostly non-track specific) parts.

i live less than three blocks from freewheel valencia, and i much prefer the hayes one, although i do go into the valencia store if i'm in a hurry.

Three thumbs up to Valencia Cyclery, the peeps in the service area are awesome as are the sales folks. No attitude + always friendly and helpful = loyal customers.

American is good too although pricey and Henry the mechanic there can be terse sometimes (comes from always being busy I guess).

wow.

i've met carlos once or twice because he's dating an ex of mine. i can't personally say anything bad about him - i exchanged a brooks saddle once and he was totally cool about it - but the **** that happened to you is unbelievable. coming from the guy who owns freewheel that's surprising - and it says something, esp when i hear people badmouthing the valencia shop while praising travis and the hayes shop.

I used to defend Freewheel Valencia too until that happened to me.
Could've been I wasn't buying a bike that day.

my first instinct would be to guess carlos was having a bad day, but who really knows...
i mostly have an aversion to that dude with the creepy stare.
