Same seller, think he's parting it (urgh). Frame is too small for me and (I think) too large for Otherguy, so we both have to go home mopey.

Yup; too big for me... I'm waiting to find mine in a barn/yard sale for $20 anyway.... Been waiting now for quite a while.

While not a René Herse, I did get my Singer for a decent price... Hanging in a local bike shop; shop owner didn't know what kind of bike it was (no decals), and sadly, tossed out the scruffy original bags that he got with it...

The nicest bike I've ever seen was a Singer. An old lady at the arts center I work at asked me if I knew anything about vintage bikes. I get asked this, usually the person winds up having a Fuji s10s or something (no knock on Fujis). When she said she had a Singer, I nearly keeled over She had called all the local shops about it, but as to be expected, not one of the local shops had the slightest idea what a Singer was. I was the first person she had found with a clue. Too bad she was 4'9" and I am 6'2" or I would own a Singer now. I, too, am waiting for my Rene Herse to show up at the local goodwill auction, where I will buy it for five dollars.

The nicest bike I've ever seen was a Singer. ... Hey, if an Alex Singer is good enough for Jim Cunningham (at 64cm, his is even in your size!; see second picture from top in:
http://cyclart.com/rpeople.html), it should be good enough for lots of us!

This has nothing to do with need. Its about. . . bike lust.
Just think, you could hold it a year or two and sell it off to the east
for 3 times that much. . .
I hate that its been parted out.

The obsession with collecting bikes is a manifestation of our love for the machines and their aesthetic. Herse, Singer, Toei represent a particular breed of cycle and are in a class by themselves (you could add a few to the list). They are meant to be looked at, admired and ridden hard. Unfortunately, there are few around and the ones that are go for mucho dinero (or francs/yen). Yet we will continue our search. Meanwhile, we will find many bikes along the way that are interesting and fun to ride… however, they probably won’t have a $2000 crankset!!!… cie la vie!

The person that bought the Herse crankset also purchased these TA pedals...
