And another question,

Does anyone use the granny ring on a 3x9 set up? I've been offered an upgrade to 3x9 ultegra on the Optima Baron I've ordered ( :) ) and I asked if I could go to a 2x9 for hardly any more reason than I think it looks more appropriate. Weight saveing is negligable.

Any opinions?

Thanks

If you plan on doing any steep climbing, the granny ring is a good thing.

Get a triple with a small chain ring for the pedal arms and a big cassette on the rear wheel. Shimano makes a 32 tooth cassette for 9 speeds. See what the LBS is selling cheap.

If you are climbing a big hill and can not pedal your bike you can get off and walk. No shame walking a recumbent up a big or small hill. No need to go fast when riding a recumbent with friends, on a bike tour or organized ride.

Use those grandma gears and wave to the folks on the road. Enjoy the ride or walk up the hill and smell the roses along the way.

Forgive Spuds. He's been smelling way too many roses...
