I was wondering... Are self sealing tubes worth it. I mean do they actually do their job decently. I know they are a bit expensive, but is it worth buying them to try and save me some riding time?

If you don't mind the weight penalty, they work fine, in my experience.

I've been running tubless tires with "Slime" in them for about 2.5 years now with, literally, thousands of miles on various tires (all equipped with Slime) and I can honestly say that I have never - not once - had a flat from normal wear (the only flat I've had in that time was from tryin to hit a blind jump, missing and slamming my front tire into a 3ft dirt wall...can you say severely torn sidewall?)

They were especially impressive during the 24hour race I rode in Idyllwild where the trail was literally filled with goatheads. There were so many flats during that race that both Kenda and the LBS (both of which brought hundreds of tubes) ran out before midnight. During that race (I did four laps...9.5 miles each) I didn't have one single problem with flats despite the fact that I found numerous goatheads stuck in my tires after each lap. When I found them, I popped them out, a little green goo hissed out and presto! no more flat.

Same setup on one of my bikes, same result. I only have two years going though.

If you're in goathead country you really don't have a choice.

I tried them, sure they work well. But i dont think the weight penalty is worth it for what i do. They have their purpose and they work, but also i am not in goathead areas so im off the hook

Goatheads? That must have been something special.

Ive never seen a goathead on the ground, but they wind up stuck in my tires alot. Where do they grow?

as far as I know they grow on bushes low to the ground.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

Goatheads? That must have been something special.

Imagine a race that has about 1000 riders on the course at any given time. Now imagine between 5 and 15% of those riders stopped at various places along the trail, fixing flats, cursing at their bikes or, worst of all, walking all the way back to camp (some geniuses didn't bring spare tubes out on the course.) Believe me, it was something special!

Ever since i put slime in my tubes i havent had a flat. Im not sure if its because of the slime or because i havent ridden over any prickle bushes but hey, im happy!

Same here. When I said alot, I meant along time ago I had alot. I dont really know if the slime is working, since I havent seen any in my tire lately. My rear doesnt have slime and I never get flats with it. I used to get pinch flats alot, but now I keep my tires up at around 40-45 psi.
