General Cycling Discussion - It feels nice to be nice

Today, a friend of mine who bicycle commutes came over to have me tune up his bike. Amazingly, despite all the time he spends on a bike, he doesn't know much about bicycle repair and maintanance.

I had to tune in every cable, true his wheels, did some work on the derailures, and then I rewrapped his handlebars with some good tape I just happened to have.

He was so appreciative, that it sure made the effort worthwhile. Man, that is better than cash.

Also, in the past two weeks, I gave away three nice bikes that I rebuilt. Those cats are delighted too. The bikes didn't cost me anything, but they are bringing a lot of joy (and transportation) to some new bicycle commuters.

In some ways, I am glad that I don't rely on bicycle repair for income. Doing it as a community service rocks.

I've got this Schwinn Super Sport with broken spokes and missing friction shifters (I needed them :) ) I hear tell from Oscar (whatever happened to him?) that the Super Sport has a unique frame construction.

I'd send it to you if I could afford to. No sense it letting it waste away. I can't use it!

All those Elks, Lions, Moose, Rotarians, Big Brothers and Sisters, and the countless groups and service organizations I can't even think of, don't have it wrong. Volunteering your time, being in service to others, is what makes this world go'round. It's the best feeling you can get.

Mike, great work you are doing, keep it up, it's nice to know that nice people still exsist. Mike I used to volunteer for a lot of things, until last year. I am tired of people taking advantage of my free help to make themselves look good, and they treat the volunteers like crap, so no more of that for me, unless children are involved than I MIGHT do something for nothing, but I just feel that no one appreiciates all the hard work that volunteers do.

1) I have a set of Schwinn TwinStiks, if you want them. They appear on eBay periodically, as well.
2) The Super Sport and Superior had fillet-brazed CrMo frames, instead of the more familiar, and heavier, electroforged gas-pipes of the Varsinentals.

Unfortunately, I'm not like Mike in this way...I just keep one bike operational, by hook or crook!
