Advocacy & Safety - Advocacy T-shirt.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I'm thinking of doing up some t-shirts with the California Vehicles Code as it applies to bicycles on the front, at least the pertinent parts. Any ideas for something catchy on the back. I'm thinking non preachy, non-confrontational and a little more original than "one less car." Right now I'm leaning towards the Share The Road sign on the back and the below portions of the law:
Laws Applicable to Bicycle Use: Peace Officer Exemption
21200. (a) Every person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of a vehicle by this division, including, but not limited to, provisions concerning driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs, and by Division 10 (commencing with Section 20000), Section 27400, Division 16.7 (commencing with Section 39000), Division 17 (commencing with Section 40000.1), and Division 18 (commencing with Section 42000), except those provisions which by their very nature can have no application.
Duty of Bicycle Operator: Operation On Roadway. VC 21202
a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
1. When overtaking and passing another bicycle or motor vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
2. When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
3. When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge. For purposes of this section, a "substandard width lane" is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.
b) Any person operating a bicycle on a one-way street or highway with two or more marked traffic lanes, may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of such roadway as practicable.
Carrying Articles
21205. No person operating a bicycle shall carry any package, bundle or article which prevents the operator from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars.
Permitted Movements from Bicycle Lanes
21208. (a) Whenever a bicycle lane has been established on a roadway pursuant to Section 21207, any person operating a bicycle upon the roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride within the bicycle lane, except that the person may move out of the lane under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle, vehicle, or pedestrian within the lane or about to enter the lane if the overtaking and passing cannot be done safely within the lane.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to leave the bicycle lane to avoid debris or other hazardous conditions.
(4) When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.
(b) No person operating a bicycle shall leave a bicycle lane until the movement can be made with reasonable safety and then only after giving an appropriate signal in the manner provided in Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 22100) in the event that any vehicle may be affected by the movement.

It would have to be a big shirt.
It would have to be a big shirt.
Nah, just fine print... right in front so that anybody talking to you would be able to read it.
On the back I think something like a Share the Road and this "Every person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights... " under it.
Maybe like this:
Share the Road
"Every person riding a bicycle upon a highway has all the rights... "
Let me know when you print 'em up. Considering any long sleeve? How about bright colors?
There is a lot left out, but hey, you have to fit this on one shirt.
I'm thinking it will look like the shirts the Seniors get with all their names arranged to look like the year of graduation. Maybe arrange the laws into a silhouette of a cyclist?

Actually I'm thinking of the traffic sign with the bike and the car side-by-side with the words, "Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Rules." I'll try and work up a design shortly to share. Though I do like the back of this SF shirt:

the one that says that cyclists can use the full lane.

Yeah, I know it's not the full code, but I think these are the most important ones, the ones about taking the lane and when you can leave a bike lane. The ones about cycling drunk, lights, helmets, and above shoulder handlebar height seem pretty obvious and common sense to me. I know for my part I over do it on the lighting, would never ride a chopper bike or without a helmet, so I think the law is pretty clear and understood on those topics. I think the ones I'm putting on the shirt are the ones where there are some common misunderstanding between cyclists, motorists, and some law enforcement officers.

When you finalize the design & get it ready for putting on shirts, could you pass it along for other cyclists to maybe modify for their own states?

This gets my vote: "Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Rules."
I've got a shirt and some stickers that say:
BICYCLES ALLOWED FULL LANE
ORS 814.430(2)(c)
Of course, that's the from the Oregon Vehicle code...

It's a lot of information for the front of a shirt. I know there is a lot more, but if you put too much on the front, people will not read it and the letters will have to be small.
Think about leaving the part about carrying packages out, I don't think for this shirt you need that. When you get to the silk screeners they may want to eliminate even more. Before you come to a decision about what is on the shirt talk to the people making your shirts and screens.
You may end up wanting to put part of these laws on the front and some on the back to get a good readable size. In fact I'm almost positive.
Your highest cost is going to be in the set up or the "start up" cost. Typically the biggest part is having the screen made in the first place. If you are getting a quote and you are doing some T shirts, see if you can get some cycling jerseys added in to the quote if you think you can sell some jerseys. If the cost seems very high get back to the forum and see who wants to contribute to the project or maybe even to buy a shirt after they are made to help with covering the start up cost. Maybe run a poll or something similar that the moderators would approve, as a way to see who is interested. Get three quotes from three different places, that way at least if two are similar and one is too high, you get a feeling for a fair price.
I think you are doing the right thing to start with a big market like California. I don't live in California, but if the Tshirts are around $20-$25 I would buy one. I would also get a jersey, but I don't want to pay for a jersey unless it had my exact state laws on it. No reason to work on this now anyway. I would think you could sell jerseys in Califonia.
If it really takes off consider a sew on patch, or something that could be attached to a shirt, jersey, back pack, or pannier. Or even just a plastic laminated card that you can carry in your wallet or clip onto a zipper pull.
If it all works out well consider giving a piece of the profit to help the cost of running the forum, where the idea came from. Good luck. :)
Heck you can see how well it will work simply by printing the CVC on a piece of paper and holding it over an ironed T shirt... Play with the layout to get it to look good first.
In fact you can even "Do This at Home."
I know that I can get iron on pages for my HP ink jet printer... Bam!
Instant T shirt.
All I need now is a clean T shirt. :D

You could just make it a cafepress shirt or something cheap and easily customizable (like the Underwear Nazi?)
I would rather have a pad of sticky notes with the code on it I could give to drivers (and police officers who don't understand the law).

I agree with some profit heading back to the forum. In fact the first profit I make I'm buying a membership.
try custom ink (http://www.customink.com)...
I have used them, and I know lots of people who have used them. The quality is really good and you can send your artwork in (i forget which format). The price is very reasonable.

How about some bike shorts with that on the rear panel area (like my race shorts)...
we all know what is most visible on a cyclist... :D

If it were on a jersey and you got pulled over by an ignorant cop, you could just show him your jersey. That would be classic.
"No officer, it says right here on my upper left ab portion of the vehicle code that I am allowed to do this."

OH? you mean I'm violating this law? ................. The one I'm pointing to? .......
The one PRINTED ON MY SHIRT?......................? THE ONE THAT SAYS I CAN RIDE WHERE I WAS?
that one?
I can't stop laughing about this one. I have a mental picture of this happening. :D
The logical progression is wearing the shirt to court and showing the judge that you had the law right on your shirt. THIS LAW.......? your honor?

You might as well just put a big bullseye target on there with the caption "hit me here if you don't like cyclists", would have the same effect. I think most non-cyclists (and probably even some cyclists such as myself) would see this idea as preachy (that is, if they bother to see it at all). Good luck. I'm just going to ride instead :)
Hey Treespeed... here is a list of all the codes that may apply to cyclists... beyond the 212** section:
http://bikesonoma.org/Etiquette/7_cvc.html
I think something funny would be more effective, like:
2 cyl.
3/4 HP
@ 90 rpm
I think that's someone's sig. Anyway, it would make people chuckle and perhaps give you some space.

Anyways, it looks like the guys for bike summer beat me too the t-shirt idea

Yeah, that's the guy!
As for a cyclist's HP, in high school we once calcualted our maximum HP by running up a flight of stairs as fast as possible. The most anyone got was just over 1 HP, but her was a big guy. I suspect a trained cyclist could produce an average of 3/4 HP with a peak of 1 1/2 HP, or more.
Time to take a spin on the dyno... ;)

But James no one said that bikes are not vehicles, is there a particular reason why you felt the need to inject this into this thread, or do you just have VC Tourettes syndrome? Must be interesting at work, when you sporadically blurt out, "Bikes are vehicles!."
"That's nice James, but we were wondering what you'd like for lunch?"
Either way, I'm glad you got that off your chest and anytime you don't feel like a particular post doesn't have enough VC please be sure to pipe in.

LOL, Treespeed, that's hilarious, but I think you owe James a break. I looked back at his original post, and I think he was simply suggesting "Bikes are vehicles!" as something that could be printed on a T-Shirt, which was not as much of a non sequitor as you make it sound. After all, others have provided their suggestions too. Things got messy when you didn't realize that's what it was, and he didn't understand that you didn't realize that. So you're both assuming the other guy has your perspective, and talking past each other. Pretty funny.

In Australia there are some disposal shops selling black t-shirts and jackets with letters or words that read either FBI or security on the back maybe this would help.
Or a bike group was selling t-shirts that a picture of a bike rider with a arrow directing drivers around the bike rider.
Or another idea would be on the back have the cost of owning a car maybe compared to a bicycle.

Yeah... FBI means a real lot in Australia... which leads to the suggestion that it's a waste of money.
Honestly, if drivers can't see signs that tell them to give way.... or stop.... or travel at a particular speed... or modify their behaviour because cyclists are on the road... or not drive in bike lanes...
... what chance does a moving billboard have when it's buried in the gutter and the driver is speeding past in sheer oblivion?

Dude, you need to chill out and maybe check out what this thread was originally discussing which was putting the laws that allow cyclists use of the roadways on a t-shirt. Your racist and insensitive comments break no laws, but are in extremely bad taste and have no relevance to the discussion at hand, except to put your bigotry on public display. Maybe you'd prefer it if we veered this thread on to the subject of your ignorance of english grammar?

Thanks for telling me to chill out even those if you read my disscussion it was about t-shirts design before Rowan started with his comments.
So will you be telling him to chill and tell him his comments had no relevance to this discussion?
And I sorry if you think I put my bigotry on display even those you say I didn't break any laws and Rowan still hasn't provided the law.
But I won't do it again such as making comments about larger size t-shirts which was in response to your commets "Gene, I don't think anyone makes a t-shirt that big, but thanks for the info".
Which I like to point out they do make and sell them and I am wondering if the people who make and sell them have extremely bad taste?
So are we both going to chill out and talk about t-shirts design like what I mentioned in my comments such as the picture of a cyclist and arrow reminding drivers to give room to cyclist when passing?
PS And why is that some people who complains about other people grammar are ignorance of their own mistakes?
Is it english or English?
