When I read the thread on the Philly radio station (http://www.xpn.org)
posted by nick burns (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=93811),
I thought I would share my favorite radio stations on the internet,
and others could share their favorites, too.

When I went to UNC, I was a DJ on the student-run station, WXYC. (http://www.wxyc.org/)
In 1994, we were the first radio station to simulcast over the internet. (http://www.wxyc.org/about/first/)
They now offer a live playlist, which is a nice feature.

Now I am a DJ on Duke's station, WXDU - where the staff includes members of the Durham community,
as well as Duke students. We have a RealAudio stream: (http://www.wxdu.org/)

Both stations accept live requests, and are happy to fill them... check 'em out!

B and D...US radio sucks so bad, I have only selected three buttons on my car radio out of six...The other three revert to the same three original choices...
Two are NPR type news stations and luckily the other is one of America's very few independent music ( alternative adult- & I mean adult) stations... Appreciate the tip and with an actual independent choice here in San Diego , the need is less ..
thanks..and good luck...Hope you do not get to be Tom Petty's 'last independent dj'...and get to be a real dj with choices..many of you dj's are trained in your craft and appreciate your attempts to make life better for us - being trapped out there in our media wasteland....
I suggest if US radio does not improve..Then auto makers needn't continue putting on the scan button function......Why?

taken from the mission statement:
WXDU seeks to give its staff the freedom to pursue their personal aesthetic within the framework of a cohesive format.
WXDU aims to provide the listener with an alternative viewpoint untainted by commercial interests.

B and D...I fear the only way we will get real music is if it is independent of any commercial venture...I would expect no less from Duke...Can they be linked to the rest of the world through satellite, so we can expereince real music on Kansas..
What I do , I go on a road trip...I tape my favorite KPRI before leaving and take my favorite dj's along ...Commercials and all...One example that commercialism and (art)radio...It is possible but unlikely that the two can co-exist.

I've never listened to much internet radio. Is it the broadcast simply streamed over the 'net or is it actually different content tailored to an internet audience(whatever that is)? I don't tend to listen to much radio due to the commercials and poor reception at times. No radio in my car, atm. I tend to listen to my mp3 player and my cd's more than anything else.

Karldar..Question..If we do not have a reliable way of hearing new music over the media....how the heck do we know what's new..what we like..what we want to buy...I call it censorship....
I will not subscribe to satellite radio..besides, I think 'Serius" radio outlet no less controlled than commercial radio...
This is harmful to artists and music consumer...We have no way to keep up with whats new...except for maybe B and D's internet option...
Question...Is streaming radio as good a sound quality as FM..?

Well, cz, most of the 'new' music I pick up doesn't get airplay anyway. Maybe on a college station, I guess. I agree with you wholeheartedly about commercial radio and censorship, tho. Another reason I tend to do without it. Maybe I should be trying to change it, but I really think that it'll peter out eventually. Collapse under its own weight, so to speak.

Karldar...I think monopolies die hard..Until the people feel deprived and tired of being fed just crap , it will not change...
Here in San Diego we are truly lucky..We have a commercial ! Radio station that plays , My kind of music...Lots of it...As they advertise ..."No rules." Here, we are So lucky..
Without this indespensible station, I would not have the slighest idea of what I liked....or what to buy... I fear each day, one of the sob' in conglomerates will buy out this station, because they have a strong signal....then music will be history to me, unless Bad Seed is our saviour from the crap our outlets call music...
