I'm looking to paint my frame. My plan is to sand the factory paint smooth, but not down to bear metal, then prime and paint over that. My question is, what brands of spray paint (primer, color, and clearcoats) have any of you tried and what were your results? How did it look and how durable was it? This is my town bike, so it sees some nasty weather and a lot of bike racks. I'm willing to give up some looks for durability. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I don't have much experience in automotive painting but a friend of mine does some. If you've got your own spray gear, then I'd go to a panel beater and ask for some left overs. I paint wildlife with acrylic automotive paints, sometimes using an airbrush and they results are quite good. I think your surface preparation might have to be up to par to give a good finish.

One of my bikes was in need of refinishing, so I stripped the frame myself and then took it to a powdercoater. Cost was US$60 for two layers of color plus a layer of clear. They would have stripped it too for another $45. Powdercoat is more durable than regular paint, although powdercoaters can't do some of the neat effects that a paint shop can.

Krylon doesn't hold up. So far, I have to say that my DIY paint job with Dupli-Color paint is holding up at least as well as the original paint was. Which is to say, there are some chips and scratches, but nothing more than I'd expect.

The intergity and clean of the primer to metel is paramount.
Outside it's clearcoat and put waxes\ surfacing (like cars).
