Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Best NYC Wheelbuilders?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Can anyone reccomend a good wheelbuilder here in NYC? Putting a new track wheelset together and wondered if I could get any accounts of first-hand experience of some well built wheels. Thanks!

bikeworks on ridge st.
you just gave to catch them when they're open.
my guy in jersey built me my 28 hole shimano hub with mavic open pro for cheap (well under $250). put it on for monster track and haven't had a problem yet, messengering on it every day. very smooth, very stiff.
also, only 3% sales tax in jersey.
problem: he's in jersey.
anyway, here's a link http://jamesvincentbicycles.com/
ignore the crappy bikes on the first page. they have pride in their work, they just have to sell to the NJ suburban crowd. oh yeah, not hard to get to from the city. i go there all the time after work.

That's a good price.
I'm having Trackstar build me a wheelset for $275 (MOP (black) and DT Revolution spokes, 32 hole, 3x) excluding the cost of the Nashbar hubs I'm using. (The Nashbar hubs were on sale for $50 recently.)
I'll report back when I get the fixed gear bike built up.
As far as good wheelbuilders in NYC, usually good bike shops have good wheelbuilders employed. The key is finding these good bike shops and developing a relationship with them. For me, for road wheels I use Yee at Conrads Bike shop.
Yee is still there? thang!

I had a set of wheels built up by James Carpenter. His email is bicyclemechanic@att.net. James is a cool, comptetent mechanic who's converted his East Village apt. into a bike shop. His prices are reasonable, his work is impeccable and there's no LBS attitude. I had him build up a set of SUZUE promax on Mavic Open 4 rims I got on closeout from Nashbar. My total wheel price was well under what I'd have spent for lesser quality wheelsets available locally.

James is great, especially with wheels. He's built several for me, none of which I have ever had any problems with.

dave went over thee build with me in excruciating detail for an hour + -- which i'm really thankful for. we discussed the relative merits of a radially spoked front wheel, but in the end my vanity won over. :)
there was also a discussion in the forums about the allen nuts on the back hub, and how they sometimes don't fit, he hooked me up with spacers (and i'm still using 'em) though he did offer to grind them to fit.
good people there. no attitude, even for us roadbike conversion fixers. :)

I couldn't thank that guy enough for the help he's given me. Cool little shop, no gimmicks, all bike.
I recommend also, (Staten Island being an NYC borough), IRO. This wheel from Tony rolls strong and hasn't let me down.
