Mountain Biking - Mountain bike repair manuals

Can anyone recommend a good mountain bike repair manual or CD Rom? I'm trying to decrease my dependence on the bike shop repair people! Thanks.

I would reccommend Bicycling Magazine's maintenence and repair book for most stuff. Zinn and The Art of Mountain Bike maintence is also good, though the bicycling books has more pictures of step-by-step fixes. If you're really serious about fixing stuff and have a lot of cash, the Barnett's Manuals would be your best option. They can be purchased seperately(4 books) for $30 a piece or together in a set for $100. You can find them at big books stores and even cheaper at Amazon. Barnett's has very detailed drawings, and explains tool choices, complications, and difficulty level before every repair. I have found it to be by far the best reapir book I have owned. I have also heard, but never used, the Break it-Fix it-Ride it CD for the computer is good, although some poeple think it isn't specific enough about certain new developements, such as the difference between one company's disc brake dissasembly and another's, for example. Barnett's Manual does this.

P.S. - you might also want to try to get into a class at your local shop if they offer one. Park Tool also travels to different shops giving lessons on repairs. I have found that these classes are the best because you can work on your own bike doing certain repairs, but there is a mechanic there to fully explain everything and fix something if you mess up.

I have an extra copy of Zinn and The Art of Mountain Bike maintence, brand new, that I'd sell you for 23 bucks which is pretty much what I got it for. I bought one and a friend got one for me as a gift at the same time. Its a highly reccomended bike manual.

I have Break it, fix it, ride it. it's great for when your first starting out, but no, it is not specific enough. however, for only 30$, it helps to be able to see stuff that most books wouldn't have pictures for.

Breakit Fixit Rideit is what I have and for a newbie it is exellent. It has saved me several trip to the shop and it feels good to solve the problem yourself. The best part is that the manufactures like Macintosh more than (stupid, ugly, always breaking down, slow) PC's. By the way, in case you can't tell I have a Mac.
