Bicycle Mechanics - rear derailer hangers

So are all replaceable rear derailer hangers on road bikes standard? I bent mine today and I do not trust the LBS to know this. In my mind they are standard, but I want a second opinion before I go to them. The LBS does not sell my brand of bike. The rest of the bike is fine.

You'd have to have an extremely incompetent LBS to not know how to replace a replaceable hanger.

Nope, they're not standard and there is a whole bunch of different ones that tend to look almost the same. Try derailleurhanger.com.

Each bike company has specific rear der. hangers. Specialized will not fit Trek, Trek will not fit Raliegh, etc..... Each model has a specific hanger. A 2005 specialized hanger, will not fit a 2000 specialized.
And you have to get specific parts from an authorized dealer.

It would be rather nice if they made an ISIS for derailleur hangers, well i mean that like a common shape of hanger used for many different brands. But i doubt it will happen

I think specifying that might limit design flexibility somewhat.

There are several pages in a wholesellers catolouge comitted to der. hangers. Any LBS worth a damn will have it.

Yea thats the one issue with it. It just seems to be a pain in the behind to get ahold of hangers

Tell me about it. I've already stockpiled der. hangers for my out-of-production MTB frame. But in hindsight I probably didn't need to as there's a whole bunch of aftermarket producers for it. I haven't yet done anything about collecting replacement dropouts for my roadbike yet though.

and it seems like no two are alike. Argh, so im thinking that when im good enough with the CNC machine in my class, im going to make a stack of them for whatever frame I settle on. I dont want to make them for the leader beceause im considering buying a Salsa

Good idea. Just pay attention to the material so that you choose one that's softer than your dropout. I wish I had some CNC machines at my disposal. I'd love to design some sort of clamp-on disc brake conversion for my beloved Crosslink fork and a nice floating brake arm for my rear swingarm. OTOH, I'm still waffling over the whole disc brake conversion in general.

Thank you all for all your help, and honestly I have no faith in my LBS (they are the only one for about 70miles) so all I buy from them are small simple things, like tubes and lube. But I just order it from derailleurhanger.com, since my true LBS (4hrs away) does not keep them instock and they would have to order it and it would be sent to them, then they would have to ship it to me, so it is just easier this way...

Well im pretty lucky to have use of these CNC machines. In my school they have an engineering tech class, and a 2 year tech program im taking next year and the year after so i have lots of time to play around with them. Might as well get some good out of it besides the experience :)

I find my Vs to be pretty adequate for my riding purposes overall but there are a few times in deep nasty mud when I do wish for discs. However, everytime I think about getting discs, I also think about the hassles and cost of the conversion and question how much I really need them.

Thats what i was thinking about disc brakes when i had them. Is how much do i need them? I decided that for my purely XC and road use, they are not necessary. Its my belief that many of the folks with them dont need them, but they are super popular. Converting to them isnt cheap either, you've gotta make sure your frame and fork have the tabs. And of course wheels. I decided i didnt need them, sure i go through mud but you know what, its been super muddy here. To the point where if i stop pedaling my tire sinks 3-4" deep into crap. But my avid SD5's have not failed. If these rims wear i will go ceramic coated. I sold my disc brakes, and wheels and went for a really nice wheelset i built. Saved some weight, and for my uses i have not regretted disc brakes. The only time i sort of did i guess was this winter my rims braking surface froze but thats only a few months of the year.

you could start a thread like "disc brake woes", thats usually what i do when i have no clue what to do or somethings gone wrong
