Bicycle Mechanics - Crank/Spider Play

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

While trying to chase down the creaks comming from the bottom bracket area on my fixed commuter I noticed that there is a tiny (it's invisible but you can feel/hear it) amount of play between the crank and spider of the Deore chain set.
As I see it I have 3 options:
1) Replace it
2) Ignore/put up with it
3) Perform some kind of surgery to fix it
I'm leaning towards 2 at the moment but I thought I'd consult the forum just in case anyone else has seen the same thing.
Does anyone have any input on this? Is the crank arm pressed onto the spider? Is there a fix or should I get a new crank? This bike was purchased in 2000 and the crank is a Shimano Deore 9spd. crank.
Thanks

I ended up buying a new crankset for my fixie and moving the wobbly one to my single speed hack bike. Now it's on a bike with a freewheel I can't say that I notice it. Nothing bad has happened yet but don't do a lot of miles on my hack bike.
I think 5 years is OK for a part you can replace for £40 anyway :-)
Thanks for the reply. I think I am just going to upgrade to a better set since I plan on keeping the bike for a few more years at least.
