Bicycle Mechanics - Spray Painting a rim?

I'm building a beater ss, and while im normally not fussy about looks, I wanted to keep this bike mostley flat black. I've got a Rhyno Lite lying around in siilver, being laced to a DT hugi hub, and was curious, if I spray painted the rim flat black(2coats), would I weaken the rim or wheel at all?

Nah, unless your using some mutant bizzaro paint that attacks aluminum or steel,whichever as the case may be for them rims.

Krylon would be a safe inexpensive bet I'd say.

Paint the rim before it gets laced.

And mask off the braking surfaces if you're gonna run rim brakes.

Yes it will work. If you want all black you can buy black nipples+spokes

don't underestimate the weight of paint. My first surfboard was obviously badly sunburned and the guy who sold it spray painted it white again (difficult to beleive I know) but the thing weighed an absolute ton, and before you get into the difference in size between rims and surfboards, I am aware of the discrpancy. Just thought it might be another consideration that's all.

And it would be a lot more than 10 grams for a few coats over 2 rims

well i doubt hes using heavy paint here. I mean if hes jus using spray paint, thats light stuff. Plus its a beater anyways

Yes! My wife has a Papillon (Continental Toy Spaniel) and he body surfs quite well. We have a beach nearby just for dogs, and he enjoys it quite a bit. I'll have to dig up a photo for you non-believers. And in order to not be a total thread hijacker, I'll add that black Rhynolites look great with black spokes, black nipples, and black sidewalls. Although I don't know about the do it yourself paint job. Worth a try.

If your rims are aluminum, you could try black anodizing. Or, you could use black chrome for steel rims. You'll get a very professional look that'll last long after paint chips and cracks. But the spray paint is quite a bit cheaper. Good luck.

Black anodizing would cost more than buying a new rim, by the time the rim is prepared (it is likely already clear anodized, which would have to be removed) and masked and dipped. I am assuming Byron is trying to reuse an old rim to save a few bucks.

In response to Byron, no it will not weaken your rim. Just make sure that the rim is very clean before painting. Use a solvent like mineral spirits or acetone to remove any traces of grease. A slight amount of sanding with fine or extra fine sandpaper would help the paint adhere better and longer. For the first coat, I'd recommend using a flat black primer such as Krylon, Rustoleum, or a Duplicolor (auto primer).

Ha! That's hillarious! I guess it would have to be a pretty small dog, as I'm assuming it rides on the front of the board? If you happen to have any pictures...
