General Cycling Discussion - Most stupid thing I've done today.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My first run from home to work took around 8 minutes. It's down hill all the way, not too much traffic and a very pleasant tripette.
However, I'm getting fitter and I can spin those pedals a bit faster now. In fact, since I got my cyclo computer I've been pacing myself.... seeing how well I'm doing against the clock and how hard I'm breathing. Since I've started recording my PB from work to home is 9.32. Last night in a mini-cyclone with rain and a stop at a busy intersection I did my PW of 9.59.
The worst thing is, I've been watching my times to work and they were always just over 4 minutes. Today I felt fit and healthy. Did for me a whopping 42.5 kph. Stupidly, right through an intersection. Yes I clipped my time to under 4 minutes and nearly got collected.
I do believe I'm taking the computer off the bike for the run downhill from now on. What a stupid way to get hurt.
I now consider myself somewhat chastized. Please feel free to take the p155

:D 4 wheel interaction is a good way to get the old adrenalin pumping.

Sit back and prepare for the usual onslaught of quips, ridicule and witty banter! :D
Leave the computer on but put a peice of black electrician's tape over the numbers so you can't see them. That may allow you to gauge your progress without feeling like you have to take any unnecessary risks. Personally, going down hills fast scares the bejeezus out of me. For fitness purposes I'd rather hammer up them and brake going down, even though it will skew one's average speed downward quite a bit.
If you really want to gauge your fitness levels it's time to take the plunge and get a heart rate monitor. Being a fellow computer geek, you'll love it. Lot's of numbers and details to dabble about.

my cyclocomputer can be set to run cadence and total time...or cadence and distance...or candence and average so you don't actually see how fast you're going

Ahh, it was a really silly thing to do. Fact is I don't even look at the computer until I get to work or home. I like to look at the numbers after the fact, the exception today was my downhill speed. I think that my limited common sense went out the window just to beat my previous PB. The thing is, I don't really give a rat's arse about it. I believe my own desire to improve my health is possibly now endangering it.
Now that I've given myself a darned good fright I hope I settle down.

doesn't your computer record the max speed, letting you check it out later (when it's safer)?

Good idea. At least until you make the final payment on the five bucks you owe me.
Didn't you lend him that other ten he asked for?

Not a chance. Especially after he threw me down that mine shaft in Kenya. But that's another long, old story from another thread.

You still haven't apologised for making me throw you down the shaft either. I am considering withholding until I get satisfaction.

Ok, I will give you credit. Following your "training" technique I did with the RPM contest. But when I hit the bottom of the mine shaft, I came to the shocking realization that my crank will never be the same. That's a steep price to pay for a man in his prime.

So you can't crank at all?? Where is this going BB?

It's going to hell in a rowboat, like most of our threads do. :)

Driven by you no doubt. You must have the dubious record for the most hijacked threads at BF. PM me with a few other boards you go to and no doubt I'll find the same elsewhere.
Just bring a clean change of shorts with you and continue to go so it with gusto!!

They do have bike computers that can store all sorts of data and you can download it later and compare. They also make devices that actually measure your power output on the bike. I think some of these store for download too.
Just in case you have any extra money sitting around gathering dust. :D

Whilst I'm an independently wealthy man, I prolly don't care to spend the extra $2.47 :D
On the up side, I set a new PB going home .... and I did it safely. :D
OK, so you almost got killed in this terrible storm. It's caused some 2cm ants to sneak into my computer room. Not too happy. They look mean.

It wuz worse up here mate. You get real sissy climate where you are. At one point the wind was blowing so hard, my bike was moving backwards and still registering a speed of 11 kpm. We're talking a serious wind mate. Speaking of wind, tomorrow I'm packing an all bean lunch to help on the way home.
We've had cold winds too, while your story sounds like mostly hot air...
