Mountain Biking - Dumb question (again)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, let me appologize right up front for this question. I am pretty inexperienced in wrenching, but I want to learn. So my question is this, If I buy some bar ends and slide my shifters and grips over on my bar to put them on will I need to adjust my cables? To me this would shorten the distance between the brakes and levers as well as the derrailers and shifters. But, then I think about all the play in the cables as they are and figure that it would just add a little more slack to my cables. Which is it?
Oh, and be patient with me, I will get there. I am just trying to learn here. That's what these boards are for right?

hey troutguy!
You shouldn't have any problem with the cables and the operation of the shifters or brakes. It'll just add a little more slack in the cables.
The only problem you'll have is if you put a high rise stem, or riser bars on your bike and the cables are too short.

Thanks bunch!!! I guess I am off to the bike shop this morning. I have decided that I would like a different hand position or two for longer rides. My wrists are a little sore after riding so long yesterday. Thanks again.
