My little statement here is NOT about helmet laws, but the bike helmets themselves.
- - - the following is only my opinion - - -
Standing in the bikeshop checking all the cool looking bents, my eyes look up to the wall display of all the multicolored helmets. After seeing many public displays of these head coverings and noticing how the helmets look and fit on the all the different heads that drive by. I can't help to think on how stupid I'm going to look with one of these thick, ill formed, "sit on top of your head" piece of foam and plastic. Then to beat that their full of holes. Are these gaps for ventilation?? Perhaps the holes may be a way for a jagged rock or stick to find your skull.
Experence tells me this design just does not cut it for me. At 57 and past owner of 9 different types and brands of motorcycles, I'm quite used to "real" helmets. I've always worn them, didn't really like them but my head is still in one piece after decades of motorcycle riding. None of my past "lids" had holes in them and none were to hot to wear, even my full faced.
Anyway, to my point. For me and my taste in helmets. I'll be going back to my half helmet, thinner padding
so it fits my head, not on top of it. A plain simple design that has worked for cops and harley owners for decades. By the way these get plenty of air circulation and with no holes. I might add a good half helmet also saves me money, so I can buy a nice fender set for the trike.
Off soapbox.
Cheers, John

It's not like being in the wind on a motorcycle. You are pedaling a bicycle and thus generating heat and you are going at considerably slower speeds which reduces the cooling effect.

I have a feeling you'll be ripping that helmet off 10 minutes into a ride.

I don't think logic is the right approach here.......John, please stop thinking and just ride a recumbent for awhile and with those experiences all of this will make good sense.

Heck I ride with a hockey helmet I found in the dumpster. CHEAP and works just fine. It mixes well with all the duct tape and coroplast.

Who cares about having a fast looking helmet when riding a recumbent. Most benters are slow riders and walk their recumbents up hills like me at a whopping 2 miles per hour. Some of us benters are not much faster than that on a flat road.

Style is not an issue when a fellow rides a recumbent. If style were an issue when riding a recumbent all benters would be lean and snappy like that Lance Armstrong fellow.

OK, being a very laid back, easy going type I won't judge all the apples on just the couple dozen that I've seen already.
Did a little search on the net, and at least their are plain one color lids on the market. I'll have to go to a few more shops for a look /see. Main thing is to get one that really fits my big head. I've always had trouble getting a regular hat to fit properly. Did a lot of shopping for motorcycle helmets when that time came, just because of "fit".
The right and proper fit is all important for the best protection. If your into football at all. How many times have you seen a player get hit just right and his helmet flies off??
In the years on motorcycles, I've seen to many freak things happen when you play in traffic. The cagers
just DON"T pay attention. I've lost count of the close calls on a motorcycle that I've had.
Here in Ontario everybody seems to be in a hurry in their cars and trucks, and they are terrible for tailgating
and passing. Yellow lines are ignored and they pass anyway. It's like they HAVE to be ahead of you.

Anyway, be safe, the season is right around the corner......I hope. It snowed more here last night.
