There are a number of motels (actually, a whole lot of motels) along or near Cerrillos, which is the main drag from the south entrance of I25 northerly into town. Quality Inn, Comfort, Ramada, you name it, it is probably there.

I am staying at the Comfort Suites, right off of Cerrillos. It sort of depends on your price range and desires. We are staying in a suite, which we enjoy. If I was doing the full century, I would stay on Cerrillos and leave directly in the AM on the route, which goes SE? on Cerrillos out past the prison.

Thanks for the tips. I would think we will want to be at a place where we can get around with ease, so it sounds like the main drag that you suggested is the place.

As I recall, there are some "mom and pop" less expensive motels nearer to the plaza on Cerrillos. I get a great "senior rate" (over 60) from Choice - one advantage of being 65!

Good idea. I've asked Laura to call around to the Santa Fe Motels and ask about rates and possible discounts for the weekend of the Santa Fe Century. I hope to post about 20 options this evening with some selected comments about each facility.

We couldn't find any place specifically giving discounts to Century Riders. A couple of places said only if we reserved a block of rooms. Comfort Suites is full as are a number of places we checked.
I think Denver Fox has a good point about staying on Cerrillos and leaving directly from there. Cerrillos has biking lanes, but they are awkwardly placed and on the hazardous side in my opinion. Cerrillos is a very long road so if want to leave directly via bike from your room staying on Cerillos closer to Interstate 25 has it's advantages. If you are planning on unloading and leaving from the official starting point at St. Vincent's then it shouldn't matter. All the motels shown below are on Cerrillos Road.

DAYS INN (505) 474-7330
starts at $55 per night. it has usually been the least expensive of the main chains.

Motel 6
$50

Silver Saddle (505) 471-7663
$44 old type motel, but looks pretty good from the road

Super 8 (about $62) 505 471-8811
Good Motel, but the rooms are quite small

Santa Fe Motel and Inn (505) 982-1039
Very Nice little place on Cerrillos close to Plaza $109 for basic room

Travelodge also near Plaza
$69

My best recommendation is a balance of lodging economy and a great place to be situated for seeing Santa Fe is the Sage Inn which is located at the entry to the historic Santa Fe and only about 0.7 miles from the Plaza. It's also just across the street from our place, Santa Fe Bikes & Gallery. It is also just a few blocks from Maria's.

The Farmer's Market is a hot spot in season and it is just on the other side of Cerillos across from Sage Inn. Whole Food's and McDonalds are right there also.

When I called they said they have rooms and the rates is $59 per night.

Santa Fe Sage Inn
725 Cerrillos Road
$59 per night

Please let me know if you have any specific questions or if you want any information on upscale or further downscale places.

Thanks Phil, sounds like we need to get our room reserved! Sage Inn sounds like the best option. I think we'll start from there.

I'm looking forward to breakfast restaurant suggestions of a unique and tasty place.

When I did the full century a few years back, the route went straight down Cerrillos over I-25, and I was on my way by 6:00 am.

But then, I am always an early riser.

Don't know about Sage Inn.. Stay where you like.

Wpflem had mentioned that he had some reservations or concerns about Cerrillos' bike lanes as to safety.

My point (poorly made and wandering just a bit off topic) is that at 6:00 am on Sunday morning, there is no traffic on Cerrillos of any concern and you don't need to worry about bike lanes.

This is what it looks like at that time of day. Notice all the cars. (Just east of I-25)

EDIT:

Much more dangerous are the locals further into the ride on the 2 lanes about 60 miles in.

LordOpie
03-25-05, 08:58 AM
that's pretty!

Thanks for the clarification. I'm not worried about riding in traffic. My parents used to send me into traffic to play. Okay, bad joke :p

Does anyone know about the route profile? What kind of climbs, elevation, challenges, easy parts?

LordOpie
03-25-05, 09:03 AM
Is this it?

http://www.swcp.com/~nmts/rides/Images/santaFeCenturyProfileSmall.gif

I read that the ride only has 4400 feet of gain. Is that correct? Over 100 miles, that sounds kinda flat.

Glad to hear that this many forumers will be joining us for this event. Late spring riding in New Mexico is the best, and this is a fun ride.

Love to join you for dinner, but two trips up to SF in one day (I like to spend the night before, just to avoid getting up at 5am and driving) is more than I can bear. Enjoy the cuisine, and we'll see you out on the road.

DnvrFox

Almost flat - some incline at the start, Heartbreak Hill and a couple of hills the last few miles. One of them Nora has to walk up the last.

Heartbreak Hill zaps about 50% of the riders who need to get off and walk (yours truly!)

Heartbreak Hill gains 300 feet in just under one-half mile, which for exactly half a mile would be an average gradient of 11.4 percent.

"But that's deceiving," Crenshaw said. "The first tenth of a mile is 7.5 percent, the second tenth is 15.2 percent and the last three average 12 percent."

In other words, it's real steep. Seemingly every year at least one rider will run out of gas near the top, struggle to unclip from their pedals and topple over. After cresting Heartbreak, however, riders enjoy a long descent followed by generally flat roads...

See the map below. The black star in the upper corner is the very center of Santa Fe. The red star just below is the Sage Inn on Cerrillos. The green star is the official staring point of the century on St. Michael's Dr. The lime green heavy line denotes the route from the St. Vincent's Hospital starting point to the town exit past I-25.

The Sage Inn as you can see from the map is about 1.5 to 2 miles off the route.

If you want to stay on the actual biking route, I recommend staying further down Cerrillos. If you want to experience Santa Fe and minimize boring driving, stay closer to the historic district. I think the Sage Inn is likely the best place for that balance of distance and economy lodging. The areas further down Cerrillos, e.g. along the actual bike route are routine, boring commercial areas of no cultural or historic interest, and usually bustling with auto traffic.

I can't visit the Sage until tomorrow, but I can take a take a look at a room then and again ask about availability, then do a posting.

I'll send breakfast spots with that communication.

wpflem

The Sage Inn looks very good. It's the type of two story motel with door opening to the outside world.

Now what is disconcerting is that they have raised prices from $59 per night to $92 per night just since yesterday because they are now booked at 90% of capacity.

I tried to cut a deal to set aside 10 rooms at discount pricing for folks booking with the Santa Fe Centry Ride, but I haven't heard back so I don't know if it will go through.

The Sage Inn in 0.6 miles from Maria's Restaurant and 0.6 miles to the center of Santa Fe.

03-26-05, 06:06 PM
Okay, I talked to the folks at Sage. They let me set aside 10 rooms for participants in the Santa Fe Century which I thought was pretty good since they are already 90% full and it represents a price reduction from $92 to $69 per night.

These rooms will be held only until 4/15/05.

You can call toll free 1 866 433-0335 to reserve your room. Just tell them you want one of the rooms reserved by Santa Fe Bikes. You can reserve for all of the days or just one of the days.

I hope this helps.

Sorry, didn't take a pic of the business section at 6:00 am Sunday morning. BUT, the number of cars was the same. Anyway, I think it is a really neat picture, and gives a nice feel to the SFC! This pic was just SE of the prison, as I recall.

I'm jealous. I love Santa Fe. Maybe next year. Ifff I was going to Santa Fe, I'd be staying at the El Rey, on Cerillos. It's really nice, run by locals, and has rates from $80 (one bed) to $120 (suites). Every room is unique, and the suites are really nice. AAA and AARP discounts. Here's link http://www.elreyinnsantafe.com/

Many great places to eat in Santa Fe, but if you're on your way to Taos and get hungry, go to Jo Ann's in Espanola - amazing, fresh grown, inexpensive. Probably the best, authentic, northern New Mexican restaurant - none of that Tex-Mex stuff. Link: http://www.joannsranchocasados.com/

We've vacationed in Santa Fe several times and my wife would find out all of the great places to eat when she took cooking classes at the Santa Fe School of Cooking.

We stayed at El Rey last year. Had a group of us (10, I think) staying there so we had the largest suite they have. Full kitchen, very spacious, great hot tub and close to the ride route. From experience, a hot tub at the end of a century is a wonderful thing... :D

Still working through whether or not we'll be making it down for the century this year.

THE EL REY is a good place; it is well located for Century Riders, and it is reminiscent of the good old days of Route 66 motels, but when I called last Thursday they told me they were booked up. The Pantry is also very close-by and it is a prized breakfast place and they serve excellent Mexican food all at reasonable prices.

For those wanting a little extra time to explore historic Santa Fe, the Sage Inn is better.
