Commuting - Do you post while at work?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

View Full Version : Do you post while at work?

Okay, confessional time. I see plenty of posts (including mine) go up here during my working day. Since this is the commuting forum, I think it's safe to suspect that at least some of you must be at work like me. Of course I realize it's possible that it is before or after your work day because you are in a different time zone, or you work a different schedule than I do. So just I'm curious how many of you are actually posting from work, when you really should be, uhm... working.

No need to identify yourselves if you've 'fessed up to the "wrong" choice. :)

if my boss had any idea just how much of my work day is spent on reading forums and news online at work, I would be fired :p

Okay, 20 minutes later, 7 voters, running 5 to 2 for "Almost always" - things are not looking good for the ol' Protestant work ethic... But I'm going to resist drawing any conclusions until all the "good" people get their chance to weigh in after they get home! ;)

Hahaha.

I use the 'net a lot for legitimate business purposes anyway, and it's hard not to sneak a peek at this forum once in a while. Mostly during breaks, but I admit I sneak in a post during work now and then.

In Scott Adams' book, The Joy of Work, he recommends not even taking a job where you don't have internet access.

Bolo, I am sure to take on the jobs no one else wants. My hand will goup in an instant! I may wind up fired with you someday, but for now the prospect of someone else having doing my job keeps me safe.

Since many of you are programmers....

The amount of posting I do is directly poportional to how much J2EE-related crap I have to do. I swear to god, I would rather deal with the worst Swing component nightmare than deal with godamn web-based applications (especially since they are not necessary for freak'n in-house software apps, but since we have a "high-powered" j2ee "ars-hitect" in control, everything, including the toilet, will be JBOSSED).

JBOSS + JSP + Struts + JDBC = Bored as hell + fantasize about cycling + vent at conservatives

During periods when I am engaged in something interesting, I hardly crack open the browser.

as a consultant i am responsible for my time. i'm probably more productive in the long run when i take the occasional pause to poke around this or another forum. sometimes, however, i am simply too busy to take the time. these days i probably post more from home.

oh oh gotta go...

I will post from work if not too busy. Strictly speaking, as a systems administrator, I'm not in a production role, only support. So, unless I'm involved in an upgrade of some kind, I'm usually not that busy. If I get caught, I can always claim that I'm checking router response, T1 traffic, packet collisions, etc....

What a curious question. Not 20 minutes ago, I listened to a story on the radio about a Congressman somewhere in the mid-west that wants to remove Solitaire, every other computer game and even the internet from all state computers because of the wasted time, money, productivity and resources staff are responsible for. I think he said millions of dollars are lost each year as a result. Glad I could comment on this...from work...while being paid. Ahem...ahem.

I would if I had time at work. I am on the PC almost 8 hours a day. I find time at home either late at night or on vacation like I am now. I do have shortcuts on my desktop at work to access the various forums I read. At my work they monitor web accesses. We even have guys spot check the drives for any added software and remove it.

I'm a test tech, and I don't have much to do right now because they're not building many of the boards I test. I have a bit of free time to fill, but don't tell the boss...

If I'm in a thread that's interesting me, I get in as much as possible.

We have 1 computer with access for about 200 employees and a supervisor who doesn't like it when you go on, so you have to be quick when you get the chance.

It's a fun game to beat everyone else to the computer and at the same time, escape the watchful eye of the "Morale Vampire"

Hardly ever. We only have a few computers w/ internet access. The only one I have access to I have to share w/ about 20 other people. So sad. If I'm using the computer at work it's usually because I'm doing work. However I usually do post stuff while I'm supposed to be working on projects for grad school. Does that count as being unvirtuous?

I know it's working hours right now, but I have the day off. Actually, I'm supposed to be tiling my kitchen floor as I write. I'm such a slacker.

Must be a Republican.

I'm self employed, I have two small businesses. Thankfully, I am accountable to no one but myself. I also wear pajamas to work.

There should be an "exclusively" selection.
I only use a computer at work. Spent years in the computer industry, back when "Engineering" meant something and the term "IT" referred to a charactor on a popular TV sitcom.
When I left that field of work I got rid of my home computer as well because I was, quite frankly, sick of computers. Even at my current job I perfer to use pencil/paper for everything I can. The only thing I have used my computer here at work for is posting/reading on this forum, emailing a few people, and CAD/CAM.

They have that on computers now?

Hey Bolo!
As the SE here at my place of employment I can honestly say, "Big Brother is watching you." :D

If they are not at your workplace, I'm sure the will be some day.

This message was posted during work hours from my company computer.

i am home sick today, but usually I come in a half hour early, and spend that time checking my email and bikeforums.

If I couldn't take a break once in a while, I would have to quit my job.

Look at it another way... how many times has some bone head manager given you some task that gets canceled at the last minute after you slaved away, or sets some ridiculous deadline that you have to meet with your long hours and weekends...

This just evens the score.

Hey, at least it is not porn...

Reminds me of one of my favorite Dilberts:

Wally: The first week after getting an assignment is called "the Wally Period."
Never do work during The Wally Period because most tasks become
unnecessary within seven days.

Asok: I want a period named after me!

Wally: Whoa, Asok. That takes many years of non-work.

I couldn't take the poll because no choice fit. I never post at work, but not on principle (because it is "de minimus" & shouldn't be an issue) but because it is an actionable offense when you work for the State of Washington. I'm on the PC almost all day long & frequently have legitimate use of online sources but it would be easy for a suit to tell if I had non-work related sites up when they walked into my cube. Once wouldn't get you fired but could result in a reprimand, & one person in our office was terminated for cause when she repeatedly continued to surf & post in chat rooms after several reprimands. I do come home for lunch every day & can get a bike forums "fix" or quick post then. Otherwise it's strictly an after hours pass time for me.

I work 8 hour days.

I do a lot of reading. And sitting.

Sometimes, if I'm not too busy.

I don't get a "lunch hour" or "breaks" away from work. Quick snacks/smokes/coffee (mmm coffee...) for the most part. Sometimes not even that. What is done during slow bits is accepted (surf, read, chit chat, snack, nap), provided patient care is not affected.

Ok, so that was stupid. I'm not a programmer, but I come close.

I usually don't have time to surf the web for fun at work, but once in a while when I'm waiting for someone to get back to me I do. Mostly visit here in the evening after work.

Nope! It's not allowed where I work. Internet usage is HEAVILY monitored and people have been fired for using the internet.

I would suspect that many of you are being "watched" at work too. The programs in place that do the watching aren't necessarily readily visible, and once the "Powers that Be" have collected enough information ... buh bye. Just a little warning to be careful.

I've worked this job for years. Plus, we are only supposed to use web browsers inside a Citrix session. I use one outside the session where they're less likely to monitor. Anyway, they'd have to fire half the people here, and the whole place would collapse. Plus, I'm a little more indispensible because no one else knows how to do my job. Someone else could learn, but it would take months, especially if I wasn't there.

Wow, I even surprise myself with my cynicism.

But you're right. Don't do it unless you are ok with losing your job. And never use the web or email for anything illegal at work ever.

What is it with places firing employees just for "using the internet"? If the employee isn't getting his/her job done, then it's up to the manager to correct that problem.

If the employee has so much free time that his/her internet use is considered excessive, again, that's a problem for management to resolve.

I think of all the time that gets wasted by people going outside to smoke cigarattes and I just roll my eyes at web Nazis. I get to work around 7:30AM and there are already addicts milling about the doors puffing away.

My little rant for the day. :)

I’m a bit surprised that so many IT guys spend company time web surfing. In my shop we rigorously monitor web activity and take action when necessary. I must say that I’m a bit of a softy for my guys though. It is reasonable to have some personal activity, basically like an office telephone. But anything more than occasionally checking the news, scores, and the surf and I step in

No, I DO NOT POST at work!!

ONE: I'm not allowed to!! :(

TWO: I don't want spammers, et al, to find me at work!!! (I use e-mail only internally in my job.)

THREE: My PC is one of the oldest in the building and is...well...out-of-date!! (Some software is inadequate, at best, and I am not allowed to update it (drives the network screwy!! Never mind the spammers...viruses...worms...Trojan Horses.... :D).

FOUR: I don't want the bosses to know where I surf (and post) after hours...none of their businesss!....by doing the same thing there!!!

FIVE: I'm SUPPOSED to be WORKING...ya' know!! :p

SIX: I'M NOT ALLOWED TO!!! :roflmao:

Reviving an old thread...

I work 12 hour shifts and 95% of the job is waiting. We had the choice between a TV satelitte dish or internet access for entertainment purpose. I chose the net.
