What's wrong with me? Ever since I've been seriously biking I get really bad chocolate gravings. I'll be doing fine for a while, eating all the right things and feeling good then BAM! Chocolate attacks so bad that I must eat a box of brownie mix.

Are you craving the chocolate flavor, the sugar, or the raw eggs you put in the mix? ;)
If you think it is the sugar you're craving try eating some fruit.

I think I'm craving the chocolate and the sugar. I do try to eat a banana during the attacks but sometimes it's not enough. I need to find something more powerful than a banana.
Thanks

... and the problem would be? :D
I have the same problem. I'm currently working on a box of girl scout cookies. I drink a sports drink...gatorade...right after or during my rides and it helps. But sometimes I figure 30 miles of hard riding entitles me to two dozen cookies. :)

Hey, hold the guilt!
Chocolate is one of the most powerful antioxidant known.
And the darker, the better!
(Cocoa powder is favored by nutritionists, due to it's lack of the fat contained in cocoa butter.)

I'm still unclear what the problem is... Chocolate is good!

every person is different, but i think it's pretty common after hard physical exercise for the body to be low on energy and crave sugars and sweets --- if you're riding a lot to burn off these calories, then eating a little shouldn't be too bad.
but ideally, it's usually better to eat something with more substance since your body is probably craving energy and nutrients to rebuild itself...
anyway, doesn't sound too weird to me... i've had similar cravings for sweets (i'm not much of a chocolate fan) in the past
I agree with the others. Chocolate isn't really bad unless you overindulge.
Try dates or grapes if you want something more powerful than a banana.
I eat a couple of dates before riding. And usually a few more when I get home.

Figs topped with honey.
That's about as powerful as it gets.
I wouldn't mind spoonig honey either. Honey is natural and actually good for you.

You should try honey......pure honey......Usually after ever trail day I would eat 2 chocolate bars afterwards.
Now I just bring little bottles of honey with me....have them before, during, and after trail riding. Gives me energy boosts like crazy!!!!:D

Cannondale, this might be a more than one year late reply, but that's what's so cool with these forums anyway, so here it goes:
I can relate to your cravings: During my first tour I ate six (!) cans of Nutella (2.4 kg in total).
To me it's obvious that these kind of cravings are a sign that you're not eating enough during the rest of the day. Changing lifestyle and starting to train more requires eating much more. I think it's as simple as that.
Hi,
try chocolate Gu while riding. That will do the trick. Either make hot chocolate or add Ghiradelli cocoa to a hot cocao mix. Last ditch rememdy, pour a cup of coffee or espresso into an extra thick chocolate shake. Oh yeah.
I think your body is trying to tell you that you need more carbs. With an increase in exercise, you need to refuel the body. The obvious solution is to incorporate more carbs into your diet, but make sure the carbs are more complex carbs rather than simple carbs.
Your sugar levels are probably being depleted with all that extra exercise, so compensate by eating more carbs before you totally crash and go for the chocolate!

Hrmm..... I dunno how good of a suggestion this is, but you could always buy just some chocolate syrup, and drizzle that on top some fruit? Like..... bannana's :wiggle: Or strawberrys... or anything for that matter lol....

I absolutely love chocolate too. The darker the chocolate the better. Like the other poster said it had many antioxidants and can ward off depression. There's nothing wrong with moderation.
Did someone mention something about moderating?
;)
Just kidding! I heard chocolate was great for warding off depression too.

Koffee,
Yup, its the Theobromides in chocolate that fight chocolate.
Personally I think its the perfect food. should be its own
food group.
Marty
Maybe the newly revised Food Pyramid chart being released has chocolate as a new food group....
;)

I told my wife about this thread when I was looking for chocolate. So for my birthday yesterday she made on of those big chocolate bouquets. Oh man. Moderation or do I ride a lot of miles.:D
