Mountain Biking - Removing the cable cover

The 2 cables that run over my top tube to the rear of the back have a plastic tubing over them. Many bikes have the cables exposed, but not this one, so I can't get in there to lube the cables. with all the mud lately and washing my bike, the cables have got a little rusty in spots and I want to get some lube on them. does anyone know how to get these plastic covers off or do they even come off?

In the clear plastic they don't need lube. The tubing is there to protect your paint. Concern yourself more with the housing

Yes, but the main area of concern is the housing. the plastic isn't hurting anything and lube in there is worthless as most likely the tube is a touch shorter than the open section of cable. Next time you get cables and housing get teflon coated cables and teflon lined housing. I've been using the generic teflon cables with bulk roll teflon lined housing (Jagwire) for years and never had an issue
