sorry for all the questions lately but i appreciate the good help! :D
to put disks on my bike i would need new hubs so i am thinking about just getting some new wheels as my back one is slightly bent.
now i do quite a bit of really hard street riding like 8stairs to flat and some other big drops.
i also do dj'ing and a bit of freeride and trails but not as much.
so could you reccomend some really strong wheels.
i dont want the price to go to high but im open to suggestions
thanks

How much do you weigh?

Recently I have heard that it's not so much rim/hub strength as it is spoke count.

I weigh 145lb and I do 5ft drops and small jumps with 32h wheels.

I have heard that too. But I don't agree. Rim strength still plays a big part. Otherwise all you would see is a 48 hole xc rims on dh and freeride bikes.

I don't entirely see how the hub plays a part in wheel strength unless the hub is flexing side to side during dh or freeriding.

I think people that say that, build xc and road wheels. I kind of wish DBD would pop in and say something as I know he builds wheels for ****** dh specific riders.

Velocity cliff hanger rim. Juju hubs

Hmm...

Hope hubs, whichever takes your fancy, even the HOPE Xc hubs are practically bombproof.

Running on halo Rims... Combats, Freedoms or SAS, all will work really well for you, the rims are so cheap, fully built wheels (2 of em) for about £120..

He's worried about price, and you guys suggest Hope and Juju? I'm thinking he needs some Rhynolites laced to whatever is on special at Wheelworld.com or JensonUsa or Pricepoint.

Be careful when shopping, as some wheelsets have prices high enough to make you hurl... ;)

Strong, light, cheap Pick 2

Rhynolites/XT disc/DT DB/custom hand built = $200 delivered. Is that 3/3?

I have nothing but good reviews for Sun Mammoths laced to Juju hubs. There are a couple online sources for Juju hubs cheaper than XT. $35 front, $45 rear, both disc and cartridge bearing. I will however reccomend changing the stock grease as it can be inconsistent in disc heat.

I don't know about that. Mine have been quite good. Bang for the buck the XT / Rhynolite selection still gets my vote

I have run the XT hubs and Rhynos for several race seasons and over 5k miles each and the Jujus are no comparison. Xt is still open ball and suffers from all the maint issues of it. The cartridges on Jujus, once fitted with Valvoline or other high grade disc grease are good for 2-3k mi between overhauls, instead of 4-500 mi.

Brian
03-26-05, 05:26 PM
I think the original poster has left the thread, but if you go back and look, he's concerned with durability for jumping. It's unlikely the wheels will see 5k miles of abuse.

We have the slight problem that He is British, are these makes available in the UK?

i still think a set of halos are ideal for you, they are pretty heavy though, If you dont want Hope, get the stock hubs that come on the halos, the Diatechs, apparently they are bulletproof, and dirt cheap aswell, many dirt jumpers over here use them..

mtbikerinpa
03-26-05, 05:30 PM
My point stands. Xt frehubs are not that sturdy. I have worn out 3 and I am only a moderate urban rider. The Juju frehub is a coarser, tougher design that lends itself to the abuse stunters put them through.

WOO thats a nice price for the Jujus! THankyou for that link. but i second mtbikerpa, even if the jujus cost 20 bucks more (which i know know they dont) over the XT's. I would go for them, the life expectancy is much greater. But the RHyno lites are a good choice, or the cliff hangers. Though the rhyno lites are cheaper

ok thanks but they dont really mention any urban or freeride wheels and im not sure if i trust them as they are not very well known?

They have some tough looking hoops, but I don't think I've heard of them stateside or down under either.

I would still say velocity. A guy @ my shop has been running these for 3 years on his cyclocross bike, they are as true as the day he built them. Hes probably around 250-270

Cornish_Rdr_UK
03-27-05, 06:06 AM
The wheels are super strong, And they're a smallish British company, Ement, go onto a british forum and ask them what they would suggest, I guarantee 90% will say halo combats, they are solid as a rock, cheap and Durable, Combats were designed to do abit of everything, and they have a very good rep in the UK...

On a cyclocross bike? Sorry no where near the level of abuse a djer will lay into a set of rims.

They do here to, until the 12 year olds see the price and go running to mommy saying how much the bike industry costs. At almost 140$cdn a rim, the price even makes my cry. And don't even talk about the weight...you are right, amongst the toughest rim on the market...but you are definately sacrificing cost and weight on these babies.

the velocity rims? Check out their website
http://www.velocityusa.com/
im lacing up some of their Deep V rims for a big rider, these things have a nice cross section. THe rims are reasonably cheap too, i know Peter white likes them a lot. They are a little less than mavic and on par.

Maelstrom
03-27-05, 10:32 AM
I don;t know who peter white is.

I have seen pics, I don't know anyone that rides them or any shop that carries them. I will have to mention it to someone and see if I can grab one. I love testing out stuff haha

phantomcow2
03-27-05, 10:34 AM
Oh they are all over the place. i know my shop swears by them. THe deep V rims i got on ebay in 26" are 49.99 for a set of two. These are something like 30mm deep, the erd is only 517mm! But holy crap they are strong.

probably not. But most of these US online retailers ship to Canada

Maelstrom
03-27-05, 10:38 AM
Are you trying to sell them to me ;)....:p I will try to get them hahaha

Brian
03-27-05, 02:01 PM
I can buy Velocity hoops in the states and have them shipped to Australia for less than I can get them for over here. MY next XC pair will be Velocity, and if I have to build up another set for the tandem, I'll use their Deep V or whatever those beasty rims are. You can find the DH/Freeride ones on ebay once in a while.

phantomcow2
03-27-05, 02:15 PM
Theres a bunch of 40h Deep V on ebay right now

Brian
03-27-05, 02:38 PM
Yeah, I need 36h though. Thanks.

phantomcow2
03-27-05, 02:38 PM
Aww crap, i just got a set of 36h in 26" frm BEns bike. Email bens bike and see if they have it. I payed 49.99+10 to ship

Brian
03-27-05, 02:45 PM
He's got plenty. I'm not in any rush to buy from him though. He had them at $39, and they didn't sell, so he upped the price to $49. I'll wait and see what else comes up.

I'm also kinda partial to the Vuelta Excaliburs, but I need more wheelsets right now like a hole in the head. A wheelset ends up costing me about $800. Some of you have probably experienced this too. You get a new set, and keep the old ones lying around with tires and a cassette. Then you notice you also have a spare fork, maybe some old brakes. So you think "Hey, that's practically another bike!". A mate tells you he's got a frame he'll sell you for $200 or so. Then you go on ebay to get a crankset, and you see this sweet Ti seatpost. Before you know it, you've got another bike. Not that that's a bad thing. :D

I had vuelta rims on my first wheelset i built myself. THey were disc specific XC rims, though they were really not much of an XC rim more of a free ride rim. Those things were like 550 grams, disc specific, laser etched graphics or something. ANd cheap! A set for 50 bucks on ebay. I would go for the Deep V's from bens though, at that price it cant be beat. The vuelta rims i will say were high quality, just not for my purposes so i sold them. They were very true, and the drillings were 100% deburred

ementophobic,

The correct answer to your question needs to consider hubs, spokes, nipples, number of spokes & lacing pattern, rims, tires, tubes, and air pressure. For instance I've had excellent luck running a "Surley Disc/Rynolite/36 H/4X/14 G/Brass Nipple" wheelset w/2.3 Conti Tires & Tubes (34 PSI) on a hardtail EVIL in urban/northshore riding conditions. Matching stuff to riding conditions is essential (On the other end of the spectrum I run American Classic 300's, an IRD aluminum cassette, and Conti Supersonics on my road bike for rides like the Triple Bypass in Colorado).

If you want bomb-proof, availability, and serviceability, go with 36 H XT's; wide Sun, Mavic, or Velocity rims; and have them laced up 4X with 14 G spokes & brass nipples. They'll be light enough, reliable, and easy to maintain. Use decent steel bead 2.2 or wider tires, and keep them aired up (And consider Stan's No-Tubes). Good luck!!
