Well Im looking online and i see some rims have ceramic brake surfaces. I have no experience with these, can somebody please explain their purpose. Pros and cons? Advantages over machined sidewalls?

Pros: better wet-braking performance. Cons: eats most brakepads quickly. You'll want to use ceramic rim specific pads such as the green Kool-Stops. The rims do weigh slightly more though if that's a concern for you.

I think i read somewhere (I believe it was the Barnetts wheel builder article) that the rim lasts longer, it resists wear better. As opposed to regular machined sidewalls. Is that true?

Hmm alright, well maybe i will look into it whenever my current rims end up failing. Im pretty diligent about cleaning them so it wont be for a while i hope

Better braking surface for Vees, eats away at them faster, but performance up is probably worth it.

The reason they last longer is because it is possible to make ceramics very hard. Hard materials don't grind down as quickly (longevity) which also means it's possible to give them a slightly textured finish (better braking) without it wearing smooth real fast. The ceramic is just a coating on the rim, and I seem to remember some discussion about the coating occassionally seperating, but I think that's a problem that's been solved. Maybe someone else can comment.
Like everything, there's a few ups and a few downs, but they're almost worth having just because ceramics are cool. I mean space shuttle (http://encarta.msn.com/media_461550471_761565098_-1_1/Space_Shuttle_Tiles.html) level cool. :D
