Road Cycling - Cycling in Oregon

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I will soon be moving to the portland, oregon area in july this year and I would like to get an idea of what cycling is like in this region. I read somewhere (i cant remember where) that portland, oregon was supposedly america's #1 cycling city. Is this true? I certainly hope so. So if any of you live in this region, please tell me what it's like.
Portland is a good city for biking - there is a green belt around the city so you are never too far from being out in the country with little traffic. There are lot of bike lanes -- you can get a map from any bike shop. Lots of races and charity rides too. The largest club is the portland wheelman -- they probably have a ride or two every day of the week (check their website). Summer weather is great, buy rain gear for the winter. It is very rare that I'm out for a ride and don't see others. So, the answer is yes, it is a great place to ride. Hope you enjoy it when you get here.

well, yeah, Maybe portland is that, But who wants to ride in a city--any city? Get out into the cascades! Further south is McKenzie pass, one of the most beautiful mountain climbs in the west; Santiam pass just north of it is quite nice also. Many people love the Oregon coast road Rte 1, with its scenery and zillions of state parks. Crater Lake has a great cycling raod all around the rim; Diamond Lake nearby (with the views of spikelike Mt. thielsen) is also worth a visit.
In the east, the Wallowa and the Blue Mountains are high and dry, less traveled alternatives to the mayhem nearer the coast.
