I recently stripped the threads in my cranks where the pedals screws in and I brought it to a bike shop and they installed a thread saver on the right crank. I got the bike home and realized that the left crank had been stripped too.

I can buy a thread saver from the bike shop for a couple bucks. Are they hard to install? Can someone give me some instructions? Thanks you, P.S. this is on a trials bike.

You will most certainly get better (any) answers here. The wrenches might have used whatever it is you are refering too.

What was that about the wrenches?

How about a heli-coil epoxied to keep it from backing out or working through the other side?

Maelstrom is a moderator, he is responsible for moving your thread to the Mechanics forum so you will have a better chance of getting help. A Bike Mechanic is also referred to as a "Wrench". This forum is where the Wrenches lurk.

I have no experience with thread savers but undoubtedly someone here will, just keep checking.

Moose has it. Sorry I don't call them mechanics, I leave that to people who tear down engines :)

Please don't get offended, but if you managed to strip the threads with a wrench, you should probably leave the repair to your LBS.

I believe you are referring to a helicoil insert. To properly install one you need to have the exact correct size drill, and probably a drill press. The new special tap for the insert and the special tool needed to get the insert in place. Have the shop do it. If you need to get all the special tools and you don't know exactly how to use them, you are wasting time and money. How much did the shop charge to do the other crank?

Which side is left-threaded? I ask because I'm not sure that helicoil inserts are made for left-threads. But could be wrong.

How fancy are your cranks? A good bike shop around here replaced one of mine with a 'junk spare' for $5. But my bike is 12 years old and mismatched cranks don't bother me.

The right side crank is reverse threaded. Obviously, there are thread saver/helicoils made for it since he has had that pedal done already.

However, I suggest having the LBS do the other pedal as well. Bear in mind that, even with the proper bit, you must have proper alignment of the hole or your pedal shaft will not be horizontal.

Actually, the right crank arm has right hand pedal threads, and the left has left hand pedal threads.Easy enuf to remember.

I think it was around 25 dollars to get that insert in there. The cranks are FSA Power Pro cranks. They are on my trials bike.

It would cost more than that to get the right size drill, the new helicoil size tap, some tapping fluid, The helicoil, and a helicoil inserting tool. And a drill press to drill the hole straight. Unless you have access to this somewhere else.

I have access to this equipment at school but don't really have any time I could do it in the near future. To the bike shop I go. Thank you man.

Do you have any friends in a Machine shop or something similar? Good luck.
