General Cycling Discussion - Told to Buy a Car (Ha, Ha, Ha)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was out early this morning riding. There was a light rain, but nothing major. I am stopped at a light and this guy pulls up beside me in a Lexus. He rolls his window down and says "You're getting wet out there! Maybe if you would work a little more, you could afford a car like this! Have you given that a thought?" I responded by pulling out my keys and showing them to him. I said "Maybe if you worked a little harder and worked out, you could afford a Mercedes and look good too! Have you given that a thought?"
He was just stunned for a few seconds. He got the maddest look on his face and then tore off. I had to laugh! It was hilarious!!! He was trying to look down on me because he thought I had nothing, being on a bicycle! What an idiot!!! I'll bet he never says anything like that to another cyclist!

I just think it is so stupid how people stereotype cyclists!
Why do you have this goofy thing on your signature that IDs ISP and browser? Na, it ain't cool!

To educate you of your own computer and ISP!
I'm not talking to you until you get rid of it!

Do you realize how public your browsing the internet is? Even if you have a router and/or a firewall, the information in my signature is available to anyone. Every site you go to, every email you send, can be tracked, unless it is an https site or the email is encrypted. It's scary, but my signature is there to inform others of the lack of privacy they have while on the internet and to think twice before doing something on the net, they may regret years down the road. Case in point, I have never posted anything I wish I had not, but there are posts that I posted from the early 90's still available on the net.
It'll be OK Roody, it only displays it to you. Nobody else can see your ISP and stuff. Promise.
Well...I guess it's OK. But it still makes me nervous.

And he is right! The information in my signature changes for each person that views my posts. You were not singled out!
heheh the signature isn't supported in Firefox :DBut how did haagen know I'm using firefox if only I can see the signature thingy? I might be getting paranoid again.

Because I assume haagen has firefox and the signature did not work on his and he was informing us of that.

Haha, shamed the man in the Lexus. TCR's are nice bikes. It's shocking that we allow people to go through life unable to recognize quality when they see it. :D
I'm not a fan of the image either, but there's no real strong case against it. It's a neat trick, but less-than-savory characters could use the technique to a limited degree to track web activity and correlate it to a user name in a community like this. The image is actually hosted on another server, not bikeforums. Oh well, if I really cared I could block images from his server.
I also checked out your site, pletcgm. (But you probably already know that!) It was cool. The stuff about epilepsy was interesting, but of course I liked the bike content the best. It is so cool that you have a bike room in your house. I might do that too, after I kick my roommate out. I'm not surprised that you had a page on hacking too!
P.S. I guess I'm speaking to you again. But the sig thingy still gives me the willies. Thanks for explaining it, that helped some!

Yup, and bikes are for poor people and tree huggers who can't afford a car. :/

What a dope. You're getting wet. Like that's a bad thing. Some people do not, and will not ever, get it.

hahaha....that's good. Fortunately I don't have to deal with situation like this since NYC is somewhat a bike savy place. If I dress in my team kit and riding my race bike, I doubt drivers would think that I am poor.

told to buy a car. i was told that this past saturday saggering out of a bar. i was so amuzed by it i just laughed all the bike ride home. silly boy, telling me to get a car. obviously he has not seen me drive. it almost a public service i don't drive. however i am a safe and decent biker. i communicate well with the drivers.
Macs are for people who prefer to use their computers instead of making them work.
Safari and Firefox are the best on the Mac. I use Safari myself.

jeff-o, Blackberry, CdCf,
Jeezus you MAC losers sure are a touchy lot. Just how insecure can you be about your choice of computer? I don't really care if you use overpriced computers with limited software choices or not, but it sure is fun to see your reactions. :D
Personally, I like being able to peice together my own system. I don't see that option available with proprietary MACs. That way I can choose the components that I deem important rather than getting an off the shelf system. Think of it as building your own bike and selecting the components based on your values as opposed to going down to the LBS and buying a stock Trek or whatever brand. Now doesn't that sound better?
I wonder if he would be impressed with the price tag on your bike. The average non-cyclist goes into sticker shock at the price of an entry level bike, let along a quality bike. Maybe if you pulled up your jersey and showed him you flat abs and said "If you worked out like I did you would not be a fat slob."

Concur Ash, take the new 486/25 that I built only this long weekend. Incredibly the Mac arrived at the same time as I was building my new power system. I was able to choose from a vast range of parts to assemble it. I was even able to get a Stallion card on board so that once I upgrade from Win 3.1 I I can easily turn it into a Radius authentication server and start my own ISP. I apologise to all the Mac and dual users out there, but my AppleII will never have that sort of flexibility. :D

I take it that comes complete with VESA Local Bus? :D Screamin' graphics on that system I bet.

The graphics are unreal. It took a while but I now support 256 colours and has 512kb of memory on the card. I'm sick of it though, I've had nothing but vistors coming through to look at it since it booted.
I prefer to call the VESA the poor mans AGP slot :D :D :D Not that I'd know much about it, but I have seen the flicktures.
