OK, I know this sounds really dorky and perhaps the ultimate fredliness, but has anyone ever seen a tank top type jersey for men? I would like to work on evening out this extreme farmer tan I have developed. I tan really dark, but the unexposed part stays REALLY light. I have some nice coolmax mesh tank top undershirts I sometimes wear, but I really miss pockets. I see plenty of tank jerseys for women but none for men. Is that because real men don't wear tank top jerseys. I by way of self-defense, I promise I'll only wear it occasionally. I've seen sleeveless jerseys, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Oh, also in my defense, this is mostly Rainbabe's fault. She refuses to go to the beach with me this summer unless I at least tone down this stark contrast.
Thanks,
Raymond

Okay... you can get sleeveless jerseys at Mountain Equipment Coop (http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=16937&bmUID=1022777797657) [the price is in Canadian dollars, so that would be US$16.95] or at Nashbar (http://www.nashbar.com/results.cfm?subcategory=1145&category=70&browse=&storetype=&estoreid=&brand=&searchbox=&start=1&orderby=price1) or even Performance (http://www.performancebike.com/shop/subcategory.html?Cat_ID=5&Sub_ID=1112&Sort=1) . I've seen some triathlete tank tops, which are more close-fitting and look more like traditional track singlets. Don't know ehere to get 'em, though. I ain't no triathlete.

I've never tried this, but I have seen people who do and they have a deep, dark, almost permanent looking tan:

Get yourself a sleeveless white T-shirt. I call them Archie Bunker T-shirts, but the kid's these days call them 'wife beater' T-shirts.

In the middle of the day, when everybody else is working, you wear this T-shirt and ride your bike while looking for aluminum cans. After you have collected enough aluminum to buy a liter of Kessler's wiskey, you will have the tan that your wife demands.

When you go to the beach to show off your prized tan, remember that many people will recognize you, but you will not recognize them. It is as if they have seen you before, but you never noticed them.

Perhaps the big challenge to this approach is shaking the habit of picking up aluminum cans while you are with your wife on the beach. She will not share your excitement when you call out with glee, "Look, honey, why that's an empty six pack of Red Dog 20 ounce cans! Halleluyah, what was that guy thinking when he threw these out?!"

Rainman, if your confident with your self image, and have a descent looking upper body, then why wear a tank top? I think you would be just fine t-shirt less.

What is the difference between tank-top and sleeveless?

Cheers

That first one from Nashbar seems quite cheap at $10. I wonder why.

Aren't tank tops for WOMEN? hehee...like the others have said, a "wifebeater" would be in your best interest. You can get those anywhere

I think it depends on what the tank top looks like. The cycling one on the previously mentioned website does definitly not look like the ones that I see girls wearing around town.

Thanks for the replies. I do have nice coolmax mesh tank tops that I wear occasionally. I was hoping to find an actual tank jersey with pockets. None of the jerseys mentioned are tanks; they are sleeveless.

A sleeveless jersey is just like a regular jersey but without sleeves. The edge of the fabric reaches pretty much to the edge of the shoulder so the only extra exposure is the very tops of the arms. "Tank" tops are like the old fashioned "U" undershirts your dad or grandfather may have worn. They have narrow "straps" at the shoulder so more shoulder and a little more back is exposed.

I've never been comfortable going shirtless unless at the beach, pool or other "appropriate" place. Just the way I was raised, I guess, and hard to get past.
Thanks,
Raymond

Hi RainmanP,

I know you have heard this before but Dont tan. You can get a good tan in a bottle these days.
I am paying for all the days I spent on the beach surfing as a kid.
There is no such thing as a Healty Tan. Tanning is simply skin damage. Use a 45 or more rating sun block.
The fact that you said you are very white is even more of a warning not to tan. To repeat myself they really do have some pretty long lasting tans in a bottle ..ck it out.

If tan in a bottle safe? It could simply be a skin pigment.

I just looked at my chest/stomach in the mirror today, and it's about as white as I imagined heaven would be! I would also like to add a little color to my skin. Would it be descent to go cycling jersey-less?

I think that that entirely depends on how good looking your chest and abs are.......... It always seems that the uglist people are the ones with the shirts off, and many super fat ones too.

I think my body is descent looking. My chest and stomach are mostly smooth/flat. I don't have a beer belly or anything like that. Not much to calls abs. I guess im average in the way of looks. I think I'll try riding jersey-less once I add some meat & muscle to my body.

Oh, yes! Did I mention that I have a third nipple?:D

A cyclist with a good looking upper body or at least some strength up there, you'd be the first!

Do pro-cyclists ever pay any attention to upper body strength? Most of the ones which I see on OLNTV have skinny arms and none of them look like they workout their upper body.

There's no benefit for pro riders to carrying a lot of muscle mass whether it's upper or lower body. Since the legs do most of the work, racers have well-developed legs. Weight in the upper body isn't doing too much and is a big drawback on climbs of any magnitude. That's why racers look so skinny. That said, riders do work on upper body strength but they train for strength and not for bulk.
