Ok its yard sale season in Michigan and I need your advice. I want to build a fixed wheel from an older frame, so what frames should I be looking for? Ill use this bike for around town riding I sold my car so this will be my main mode of transport. So please give me a wish list.

thanx

a frame may not make a good wheel. i would look for a rim and hub instead...

If it were me i would look for:

1. Horizontal dropouts.
2. A waterbottle mount.
3. A good size fit erring more on the side of small than big.
4. Decent material-- from a bike store rather than dept store-- dont fix a huffy.
5. Rack and fendor eyelets-- if u want this which i would.

Most likely u will need to replace both wheels unless the bike comes with 700c tires and u just replace the rear or you get a 27" fixed rear wheel-- whcih are out there.

Good luck.

I suppose you could try to heat and bend the main triangle into a circle, but really...is it worth the effort? And who would want a wheel that heavy anyway?

hah

Cabana 4 Life- I'd reccomend checking whitepage and free listings online in your city. Do you have a Recycler in your area? It is a free whitepage listing online. Here is ours: www.recycler.com

I'm 6'2" and I lucked out with a 58cm Univega Sportour. Keep looking and you will find a bike that fits your size. Once you get it, keep fooling with the seat height, fore/aft position and tilt. It makes a massive difference. My current seat is tilted a bit back, as I ride on the tops of the drops most of the time.
You only weight 160 lbs? You must be extremly fit or crazy thin- I'm 200 lbs and ride to school everyday. How can you be 6'4" and 160? dang man.

Call people ahead and ask them to measure the distance from the middle of the Chainring along the seatpost tube to where the seatpost enters the bike. This way you can get measurements before you go. (No reason to make the trip if the bike is too small for you.)

Also, browse middle to upper middle class neighborhoods or where older people live. Usually there are more bikes in those areas.

You might want to print out the types of frame compositon you want: the versions of Reynolds, CroMo, etc.

Basically any bike is worth $30 if:
It doesen't have rust
fits you well
Has horizontal dropouts
Has smooth bottom-bracket movements
Has good movements on the front wheel's hub
