Yes, the Hardrock Sport (cheapest one, and what I have) is a good deal. It should be around $350.. maybe you can save up a little more and get that one if you pay for part of it.

I'll second the "save your money" motion.
I'll second the "save your money" motion.
I'll third it, but the Hardrock IS a decent buy

If you plan on taking it on trails then I would say no. I started on a bike with Acera and Alivio components which are a step or two above the tourney, and within a month or two of riding light XC the components and the fork fell apart. The fork was a RST (probably similar to the one on the Diamond Back). If you are planning on riding for a while and want to ride XC I would save your money like the others have said and buy a better bike. It will end up saving you money in the long run in repairs and replacement parts. If however you just want a bike to ride around on the road or paved trails this one will probably suit you fine.

What bike do you have now? Why do you want a new one? (i.e. what features are you looking for?). Just over $300 seems like the price for entry level steel no suspension MTBs. Bianchi, Specialized, Gary Fisher ... all seem to have one in that price range. Some of the component sets looked good though.
Look at those bikes and see if they fit your needs. If so get the one that fits best and has components you like. If not wait and save up some more, but if they fit your needs why spend more than you need to. In other words don't buy snob apeal.

Anyway, if they pay you 300 bucks save up another 50 and get the Hardrock Sport.

Big diff between grammar/spelling police and aolese. Thanks for pointing it out. I don't mind correcting. I was typing too fast for my own good.
Thanks for attempting to undermine the rules of the board. Cheers.

Aolese distrupts the flow of your sentence structure. Its also lazy and just generally difficult to read. We try to keep this board free of it. We don't ride small amounts of aolese but in excess it is just brutal.
Oh and a simple reason. It is against the rules to use in excess. Period.

If you are only going to look at these two brands then why did you ask us in the first place about our opinions? You have shot down every opinion or personal experience story that has been given to you, so why did you even start this thread? You had your mind made up before you even asked us. Most of the people on this board have a lot of experience and are very knowledgeable, so it would be smart to listen to them and take some of their advice.

I've ridden a DB (made by same people as Raleigh) for a little while now (just upgraded thankfully) and can say that their bikes are just not on par with other bikes in their same price range. I had a friend with a Trek and a friend with a Specialized, all of them were your basic trail bikes. Eventually mine failed when theirs kept going. Things like pivots wearing out (I know you're not looking into a FS but that's just one example) even when they were taken care of better than my friends' bikes. The hardrock is probably your best bet at that pricepoint. Good luck in your decision.

Bike Lover, stop with the aolese. You continue, no one is going to take your seriously and you're going to be out of this place, when a mod kicks your rear end out and stamps a Banned in the place of where you used to exist on the forums.
As for your bike, sorry to hear. Your family should not hate specialized. They've improved over the years, and the hardrock series is real quality. Madman2k has a specialized and does a ton of stuff on it, and as far as I know, the bike is pretty okay with that. In fact, specialized in many cases, is better than raleigh and diamond back.
(Oh yeah, go for a hardtail)

It's almost always a matter of usage and maintenance.
The Hardrock is designed for a little of everything, more specifically to take the abuse that a beginner rider tends to put on a bike. Not to hold up to 60 foot drops, 7 foot static gaps, or being thrown around.
Some of their bikes are built to be lightweight cross country racing machines, while some are built to be freeride bikes.
Seems like your dad tried to freeride with two of their racing bikes.
In fact, comparing your riding style and what bike will hold up to that, and your dad's riding style really doesn't make sense, as I would assume you aren't the same weight and strength, and would go so far as to guess you don't dish out as much abuse as he apparently does.

If they were really your buddies they whould have taught you not to type like that. What do you think your resume willl look like? GR8 wrkr lvs 2 LOL BRB and then adjitate the rest? I have gauged specialized as a great entry point, if you have to observe Dad's orders seeing as he is your financier then maybe a trek 3700 or 3900 - not sure about the Nsync Grind Shock on the 3900 (as this is a terrible boy band at that - then again all boy bands are terrible)
Is LBS classed as aolese? :p And for that matter, aolese is a neologism, not a real word. ;) Just kidding I hate that abbreviated trash. Get rid of them now!

Yet again, we have drifted away from the topic. As for the 200 people, I can see why. Typing "correctly" will takes many times the time required to give the same message. However, you will have to change here, if you want to stay. Bikeforums is what made me look smarter when i type in msn.
As for your dad, he probably bought epics and decided to do really high drops and broke the stuff. That's his problem, not specialized. Numerous bikeforums users use specialized, and I've heard many good things about them. I know raiyn owns one, and I think seely does too. I think they both love their bikes.
