I've always wondered, what kind of food is best to eat before going on a ride and how far before riding should it be eaten so you have some energy for the ride. Thanks!!

This has always worked for me in more than one sport:
Before the workout. whole grain bagel w/cream cheese, cup of coffee, yogurt and banana. Water.
Granola bars, diluted gatoraid, dried fruit and maybe a chocolate bar if you are riding for over 2.5 hours.
Energy bars just seem like over process franken-food to me.
Unfortunately there really is no "right" answer. Everyone's body responds differently to different foods. For me I am best off eating bland foods 2-3 hours before a tough ride. On the other hand my brother loves to go through the drive thru at Taco Bell before a tough ride.
I can tell you this much, do NOT eat a steak before riding! DAMHIKT

I like muesli in the mornings before a ride, gu, cytomax and water during the ride and a peanut butter, honey and banana sandwhich after. Not sure its the best, but it works for me.
Before my ride to work I eat cereal or oatmeal and fruit. Before my ride home I eat a piece of fruit or granola bar.
On the weekends I eat a small peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If I get hungry I'll have a PowerGel after about 25-30 miles.

A tallstack of griddle cakes
Maple syrup and real butter
HAsh browns (double order)
Denver Omelette
Wheat toast (dry -- never buttered)
Orange Juice (from concentrate only!)
a pot of Marge's coffee with plenty of half and half
Take an hour nap under the Yum Yum tree and then go for it

Personally I believe in eating several smaller meals throughout the day, rather than 3 large meals. This method theoretically keeps your metabolism up and gives your body a more constant source to draw energy from. I also believe you should get 40% of calories from carbs, 40% from protein, and 20% from fat (preferably mostly unsaturated). I would also think it would be better to eat things along the way that have those proportions (such as some energy bars) if you're going for a particularly long ride. Lots of times people stress carbs for energy, but fat is a good source too and protein is good for muscle building and recovery. I'm not big on energy bars either, but they're a convienient way to get nutritian on the road.
Admittedly I'm far from an expert on the subject. I do believe Lance Armstrong wrote a book about it. That might be a good place to start if you're looking for the most efficient way.
