Mountain Biking - HAyes HElped!

Dear Hayes, I am very disappointed with the design of your design of your brakes on my mountain bike. I have hayes hfk 9 brakes and the design on them is horrendous. I am very dissapointed with these brakes because all they do is hassle me. I constantly have to re tighten the lever adjustment screw on them after rides. These brakes are extremely dangerous because if you are riding for a long time and if the screw backs out due to vibrations you could be seriously injured do to loss of braking power. I strongly suggest that you make the brakes so that the screw does not back out due to vibrations. I really think that these brakes should be taken off of the market and riders should be offered a refund for their brakes or all hayes hfx-9 brakes master cylinders should be put on recall and they should be professionally repaired by a local bike shop that sells these brakes. Please take my suggestions seriously and please give me some respnose as to what to do about these brakes. John Muldoon

We now have a two-piece adjuster bushing with a nylock insert that will keep your lever adjustment dialed to the desired position. I will drop a set in the mail for you.

I over-tightened my adjuster barrel on my rear HFX-8 DH's a couple of months ago. It busted off in the housing. I just got tired of messing with 'em, so I'm now running with my Hayes MX1 '04's & haven't had a bit of trouble whatsoever.... Sad when a $120 set works better than a $250 set, huh?

Hydraulic's just haven't impressed me that much to say the least....

I just emailed them with a similar complaint asking if they would be willing to send me those adapter/bushings.

Now I think I'm gonna get some of those Avid MEchanical 7's and upgrade to some of those Shimano SPD PDm540 Or maybe the PDM520 is the PDM520 any worse than the 40? just a ques I really need to upgrade some of my parts.

I have Hayes MX-2 6" discs and the guy at the bikeshop said that you will hear some squeaking noise when you first use them, but it will eventually go away. It did, and they worked great for 3 months. Until now! At the moment they make the most horrible sound and they seem to be loosing thier braking power.

I'm going to take them down to my LBS and get them checked out. If the problem occurs i'm heading towards AVID.

What about Avid Juicy's?

Getting the AVID mechanicals is a substantial upgrade from the MX-2's, not to mention cheaper and you can use many of the same parts you have now. Save the Juicy's for when you have a higher level bike
