As of late i find myself disgusted with my peers, or those who are supposed to be. I truely wonder how apathy became so popular. mind you i maintain a strict apathetic response to religion and politics but in general i feel that i at least contribute to some social and economic whole. The passion of our age is gone and laziness has set in. As i sit, even at a university, i watch those around me claim that their ineptness and laziness is just a resultof living their life to the fullest and having a good time. by this i do of course mean becoming absolutly and disgustingly waisted at every opportunity which presents itself.
in order to preserve my self as not being a ginormous hipocrite i must say that yes i do occasionally party with friends. But in more of a L'Auberge espagnole kind of way. Not that it makes it more ok though.
But outside of my occasional weekend splurge i have accomplished things in my life. Things i feel every person who puts forth any amount of effort can attain. But that effort is not present.
i suppose it is pointless to rant. it is actually hopeless. i dont know where it began, this attitude of getting something for nothing. i just feel that my generation could possibly be known as the crucial begining of the decline of mankind. well viva la resistance .

I notice that too.
What really irks me is the way we can't hurt anybody's feelings now because it isn't pc. I mean, there is a huge discipline problem because teachers can't punish the students enough anymore.
If a kids being a jackass, all the teacher can do is write him up. I think a good ruler across the face would get the point across much better than a referral and an after school detention.
And then theres the kid who sits in the back of class throwing paper clips at people and giggling like a prick. Then when the teacher goes to say he's stupid and should just drop out of school the parents get mad and sue the teacher for "emotional damage". Emotional damage? What is this BS?? It's not emotional damage, it's a fact. Your kid is STUPID, get over it.
*whew* sorry, certain things just irritate me.
You described my roommate perfectly. She LIED to me before she moved in saying that she was okay with dogs to get the cheap rent here. Now she has decided that she doesn't want any dogs in the apartment, but I told her she could deal with a dog or move out. Hasn't spoken to me since, which is actually pretty nice.
what disturbs me is how comfortable people have become with being psycho.
they've no problems with cheating to get ahead. they have no problems with liying. it's nuts. lying can be usefull but man... use only when it's absolutlely neccessary.
also the dicks that sit in class and talk. that's all they do. what the @$% are they doing there anyway if they're just gonna talk? they can talk other places too!
and i hate it when people cheat and then claim to have finished the problem faster. i can handle someone being smarter than me.. but man.. when they fake it it makes my wanna destroy soemthing.
There are alot of lazy slobs out there, but there are a lot of people who are good and really work hard to help others and get things accomplished. Just like in the news, don't just see the bad. I know several people do Big Brother/Big Sister or volunteering around but they just don't get noticed as much as the people who act out poorly..

you can't get too bogged down with what others are or are not doing. it's a non-stop source of negative energy. you can't let people drag you down - it's your life, afterall. not theirs. just let go of the things you can't control and concentrate on the things you can. reduce and simpify. it's the only way.

Apathy has come about because of the idea that nothing is ever your fault. Younger than me (I'm 35) have been told all their Gen X lives that there is no future, it's all screwed because of everyone else and you came blame your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, schools for everything. I'm constantly talking with the younger kids who work for me that they have much more power over their personnel lives than they have been brought up to believe. I think too many parents have have spent the last 10 to 15 years chasing the almighty dollar at the expense of raising their own kids.

i just read an article saying that kids today are overall better off than their parents were. execpt for obesity. but, in general, kids today participate in less risky behaviour, have a better standard of living, and have more options than they used to. apparently. i don't really know since i'm not around kids all that much - but i'm sure there is a long way to go.

I believe that at age 35, you (and me too) are classified as Gen X. I actually like my generation and most others. The Baby Boomers are the scourge of the earth however. :)
One thing I notice is just that people seem to have no manners anymore. Kids are always obnoxious, but it's like no one ever thinks anything they do is rude or bad manners. One guy pushed in front of me in a line with out even saying anything! And kids who are parented by parents with no manners act like wild animals. I hear kids yellling at their parents and giving them orders, hitting their parents and yelling at them to shut up! And sometimes the parents just do nothing, or give the kids gum. LIke a reward. I think WOLVES are better parents.

The comment about living costs going up is true. However, priorities have changed. We live in a age where more and more we seem to unable to deal with the idea that you may have to sacrafice the new car for tuition as my parents did. Today kids have no health insurance, but dad drives a 50K diesel pick up with a $500 a month payment. Kids have 5K worth of electronics in their rooms and their failing in school and Mom complains about how hard it is to make ends meet. Then says I have to talk to the bank, Bobby is 16 next month and he needs a car. Bobby is failing in school, is overweight and needs a car? I went to Cathloic schools in NY as did my sis and bro. My sister said all her kids will go to public school, she would never subject them to parocial school. Well she worked two jobs to put them thru parocial school with some help from Mom and Dad.
FOBS is a real problem in schools. Teachers, schoolboards, principals and county commisioners are scared to death of lawsuits as a result of diciplinary action, injurys in GYM etc. FOBS "Fear of being Sued" is part of the destruction of education and many other endeavors that are part of becoming a well rounded educated young person on their way to adulthood. The school year is shortened to the point where I wonder when kids go to school. With the restrictions and lack of reasonable consequences of bad behavior in school or outside for that matter. Who in their right mind would want to be a teacher. The current attrition rate in teachers is scary and the crappy AFT hides the numbers.
I'm heartened by this thread that shows me that there are some in the current crop of college students as well as HS that acknowledge it. You that see the problem and may well be the hope for the future.
actually you do need a car in most places. just try getting anywhere here by bus. it will take you at least 2 hours to go any decent distance. and decent distances are almost all there is.
the rest of that top part i agree with.

Kids today are being raised in a society that does not value responsibility. We can't take any little injustice - someone else must be to blame and we must sue that person. Kids only have to tell their parents that they have too much homework or the teachers are mean and the parents will beat lawsuit-fearing school administrations into compliance. Truly pathetic.
If you're interested, this article provides a good perspective on the problem:

I agree ADA, it's too easy nowadays to simply put the blame on someone else. Kid didn't get a good grade on the final? It's the teachers fault of course, nevermind that the kid spent the last 2 semesters screwing around and didn't do any homework, it HAD to be the teachers fault.
I mean, take a look at the stella awards, some of the crap people sue over is so rediculous it's crossed the borderline from funny to pure stupidity.
I think we are talking human nature here, not as much a generational thing. Look, my gen has people like Donald Trump making a weekly big deal of "you're fired!" and Jerry Fawell pointing his self-rightous finger in everybody's business, saying "I blame you!". I could go on and on, maybe we're not the best of role models.

yeah, but the almost dead don't count, right?
Will he go before Terri?
I think the dude in office space said it best.
The way society is, everyone's motivated to do just enough not to get fired, no more.

No way, he's go a country to run here!
Everyone sounds like a bunch of old farts.. Our parents said that about our generation, Their Parents said that about their generation and so forth..

Hey, man, don't go too slack. It won't be too long when you're parents generation (that's me) will need you. Somebody's gotta keep the social security checks coming and the lights burning in the old folks' home. And then the folks behind you will have to do it when your turn comes to sit in the rocker--and it will. Now isn't that cheery?

First off - I'll admit it - I'm a boomer (I went to Woodstock!)
There are lots of things that I both cherish and detest about my generation. I suspect this is true for all of us.
One thing that has changed is that the media now uses the generational concept extensively - "boomers", "gen x-er's", etc. are all accepted parts of our lexicon. Political parties and corporate advertisers use these notions as demographic tools. Personally, I find that they are not particularly useful distinctions to me in my personal life. I am more likely to find friends because of other things (like riding bikes :D ) than because of age.

Urban myths. Each and every one. Maybe the problem with the younger generation is they blindly believe uncited internet "news". ;)
But I gotta agree with bab. Every generation points the finger at the next as the "decline of mankind". It makes the world go round.
