Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Help, the Surly hub isn't sliding in the track drops...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Playing around today with the new build up of my GTB (see other post for pics), and found that the axel of the Surly 1X1 doesn't slide in the track drops, it slides in the first half inch, but not all the way in. it isn't the tire, but seems that the drop is a fraction too slim for the axel. Other than that, the hub is a perfect fit and I'm crazy to get out on this bike. Is there a solution? Or do I do a little filing down of the drops to accomodate the axel. I suppose it would be nice to drop something different in the way of a hub, but this is what I have on hand. I'm going to be tapped out with a new fork.
Which brings up another question, is it sacralyge to build a bike with the fork of a different manufacturer? I have a Lightspeed carbon fork that will work, and a Chronos threadless head set, that and a crank I'll be rolling. Just need a bar, no one in town has any track bars. thought of going with a TT bar, or bullhorns from a set of drops I hacked off. I guess that's what's fun about this hobby/passion it's my bike I'll build it my way. You don't have to ride it.

is there paint on the insides of the trackends? i've run into that before, and i had to sand the pain off with an emery board.
as for bars, i'd say go with the chopped bullhorns, if you hate 'em you can always save up and buy something else later.

I would double check to make sure that it can't possibly be anything other than the axle before bastardizing the dropouts.

Like dolface, I'd check for any paint in the track ends. I've had problems sliding the axel into forks and dropouts/trackends in the past that were solved by simply sanding off the paint. I'd be more cautious of taking any of the metal out, but if the paint in the track end is necessary for structural support, well you have a whole boat load of problems.

I'd never thought to use an emery board though, is that what girls (and ... fashionable guys) use on their finger nails? It might let you take out just the paint without touching the metal.

i had this specific problem with my GTB (IRO hubs). it was just the paint.

If it isn't the paint, I'd recommend filing the axel and not the dropouts.

IRO, Surly hubs use 10mm axles the frame has 9.5mm opening in the dropouts.

The emery board did the trick, thanks. It took a while, but it did the trick.

was it just the paint, or did you have to remove metal too?

Not sure, I know there is a bevel where there is still paint in the drops, but it has some shiny metal there as well.
