Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

When I lived in Portland, Oregon I saw a hard-core commuter wearing a (BMX style?) full face helmet. He was riding very fast so it looked like a good idea. The one good wreck I had when I was a kid messed my chin up pretty good so one of those would have been helpful. Has anybody ever used one or seen one used as a road helmet? If it wasn't for how they looked I would get one for at least around town.

The accident I had two weeks ago now did rub my face (right side) into the pavement. I was wearing a set of sun glasses (actually, Fred Meyer safety glasses by Wilson), which prevented some damage.
I think riding and preventing would be best, and decided not to get a full-face helmet when I recently replaced mine.
It is something to think about though.

Yes, I have seen a bike commuter using a full-face helmet. The guy had a mountain bike, pulling a BoB trailer, and had several blinkies and orange flags on the back. He wore a full-face motorcycle helmet, as well as a floor-length dress, complete with matching cycle shoes.

I don't even want to reply to this one for fear that the gods will push my face into the pavement!

Why would one not want some chin protection? Ever see someone's face that has smashed into or slid upon the pavement at 20 -30 mph? It will grind through your skin to the bone and further. Very messy.
